Have few quick questions regarding about engine oil replacement interval and oil filter. Please, it's not a discussion about a specific brand or type of oil

I couldn't ride the bike much this year, so engine Oil(Non-Synthetic) has only ~500 miles, along with Purolator Plus(gold, PL14610 longer one) filter, but it's a year since it was replaced.

    Should I

1-Replace the oil, along with the filter OR

2-Just drain oil and not touch filter OR

3-Leave as is and replace after some miles

Also, I have some regular Purolator Classic L14610 and L14459 laying around the house. Could I use them, instead of PL ones?

Looking forward to any input and help.

I love oil threads, IMO I use a 6 month rule when it come to a time line, doesn't matter if there is only a 100 miles on it or not, its been contaminated and sitting just makes it brew. Yes a filter every time the oil is changed is what I do, lawn mower, dirt bike, old truck, what ever. It doesn't really matter a whole lot what brand filter or oil to an anal degree, getting it done does. Me, I'm a fussy one. but it's me for me. Just my 2 cents worth, take it or leave it, don't matter. ;)

I don't believe oil ages out. Keep what you have AND CHANGE it at about 2500 miles. OCD be damned !

Wife Inc. did almost same thing with Superhawk, changed oil & filter, rode it about 700 miles and parked it from October to March 2015.
We just left it alone and let her log 3500 miles this past year, then changed it out before she parked it last month. No issues at all.

I'm with RVFR on this. It might be overkill but I'd change both. Wet plate clutch sitting in oil, moisture from atmospheric changes ect. Not sure but its a cheap maintenance thing.

I use the mileage method. The book says 12,000 km. I use 10,000 km and on the zeros ie 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 etc. Makes it easier to remember. I used to ride a lot through the winter when I was working so the bike seldom went more than two months without a change. But now, the bike does not get ridden much in the winter at all. But I am sticking with my schedule.

But if you are worried about it, 4 quarts of oil and a filter is cheap. Change it. Always change both. The cost is insignificant.

Oh yea, on the mileage part 2000 miles here, and or 6 months which ever come first. you'd be surprised how much moisture is in the crankcase, not to mention the carbon acids that come from dinosaur burning. It's just lubricant, now what kind? That's another thread.. :playful:

Easier to sleep at night knowing the filter change covers your ass in the long run. Stay on target.

SQ. For what a filter costs, and considering that old filter is now saturated with old contaminated oil and hold a few ounces of that old oil. Considering you are in there already, why wouldn't you change that filter. If the cost of a couple $6.00 or so filters is a substantial factor, maybe one shoukd rethink if they should be maintaining a bike. If you can't afford bait, so sense going fishing.

First of all, oil doesn't brew.
Second, if the bike hasn't been ridden much at all, the filter will be fine.
A filter only catches metal particles, that is all it does, no magic here.
I'm a believer of using the best available product. Why I only use synthetic oil.
I only use my bike for long country/canyon runs, so I only change my oil and filter every 10,000 to 12,000k's.
If your bike is getting to running temp every time you go out (like mine, I don't commute at all), there won't be many contaminants in your oil.
If you've only done 500 miles but its been a while since you've ridden, I'd replace the oil, the filter will be fine, it only holds f**k all and it won't make a difference.
There will be plenty of people offering you advice on oil, most of them have no real knowledge on the subject, just uneducated hear say.
Save your money, spend it on good tyres or good suspension. That is where money should go.

Thanks guys. I'll hold on to replacing the oil till 2000 mile mark. Honestly, I don't want it to be an oil discussion or another oil thread.

I just wanted some opinion and advice about replacing the oil, just because I don't want to waste perfectly good oil/filter.

Thanks for all the input and help.

I'm charging my battery up today, I would run the engine a bit if I could, my Castrol rt syn and filter are expensive using the napa platinum,. I would run the engine a bit and change the oil and filter. Theses engines are expensive, switch to syn oil:fish2:

Has anyone used Purolator L14459 filter for a 6th Gen VFR? As I mentioned in my first post, I have some of them laying around and could use them.

    Based on this website: http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html

They have the same description as L14610: L14610, These Oil Filters
    have 20 x 1.5mm threads,
    14 psi by-pass valve,
    anti-drain back valve,
    2.3" O.D. gasket

    VS

    L14459 have 20 x 1.5mm threads,
    10-18 psi by-pass valve,
    anti-drain back valve.

Does anyone has any input to see if I could use them?

Just need advice and input, not trying to start a thread/discussion about Oil/Filter.

    Thanks for the help.
