Bought my 2001 used last April, and it's not as clean as I would like it to be. I know some people don't care what their bike's engine looks like as long as if runs, but I care about mine. I've seen some cleaners that you spray on and hose off, but it sounds pretty messy. Anyone had any luck with a spray-on cleaner (rinse-off or otherwise)?

I have been using Spimple Green for 30 years with no problems. Spray on or pour some in dish and scrub with old paint brush, then rinse. Used any part where grease collects.

Another vote for Simple Green & and an old paint brush. I get in the gallon size then mix it accordingly in a spray bottle.

Just use low pressure when you're rinsing the engine. :)

Gunk Concentrate mixed with 90% # 2 Diesel. Best to apply to a warm engine. May need some scrubbing with an old paint brush. Avoid the current crop of parts brushes. They are so stiff they can scratch the paint.

If possible do the job at a coin operated car wash. Apply the Gunk, let it work, soap first then rinse. Some have had problems at these car washes. The problem is that they are modified pressure washers and these dudes are using the tip of the wand too close to the work and hoping the physical action of the high pressure stream will do the work.

Avoid any chemical that "removes" oxidation from aluminum alloy..

High pressure water is used to strip paint and can cut glass and marble.

It also cuts skin on a person's bare legs when used to clean off mud. So I am led to believe.

I haven't tried it on the bike, but I have used engine de-greaser on my truck engine and was happy with the results of that. Honestly, I have cleaned my chain often but have paid little attention to any part of the motor that is hidden. Maybe I should change my ways.

The concentrates from Walmart (Purple Power) and the Costo house brand in various states of dilution with water can remove grease. Some folks will argue it harms paint. The paint on bikes and cars in the last 30 years is some tough stuff. The industry blew it a couple of times especially with the waterbourne clearcoats .

GUNK has been around for many years. Not a clue as to what it's made of. Back in the olden daze, bike shops had wash areas. A small jar of ready to go Gunk could be attached to an air hose and trigger mechanism. Gunk down the bike then follow up with a water rinse.

Myself, I use an old rag and get in there as much as possible with a nylon stick of sorts with a dab of wd40 on it. work it around seems to work for me. Personally, don't believe in water up and in below the FI *carbs) is a good thing. When I can, and makes sense I'll use hot soapy water used sparingly in places I know I can wash it out with out water getting into the goodies. I know, lots of folks ride in the rain, whats the biggie, well.... IMO it's why things like RRs are so damn temperamental, none of the electrical in my opinion likes water, even though you'd think it can handle it.
