Sorry to hear about your crash Vin. I didn't even know you were considering cheatin on your VFR. Bet she got pissed. Anyway, glad you weren't hurt any worse although that sounds plenty bad to me. That damn R6 looks a little worse for wear. I, too, have run my tires to threads in a day after noticing they were getting thin. It can get pretty close when you buy mail order like I do. I had to park my bike once for a few days to wait for the new tire...

Vin, that it terrible! What was your speed leading up to the crash? At least you were geared up. I am suprised the boots didnt help the ankle stay together any more. Best wishes, get healed up, get back on that bike!
Now I am a little worried, my tires look fine, they have 6K on them, but they are those touring jobs that come on the 07 VFR, i think they are good to like 12k or something?

My speed was probaly about 40 - 50 mph. I really think the boots did their job well, I just think that when I started to tumnble I could not tuck into a tight enough ball and the ankle got slammed at one point, which caused the break. Really tho, I had angels watching cause it coulda been hella worse. And like I said, I had checked the tire a few days before cause I knew I was getting close to needing a new one. And actually one of the guys in the group noticed the threads when we stopped and pointed it out. I'd bet I ran over something leaving the parking lot. But I'll never know for sure the whole chain of events. I will ride again. I am having withdrawls now from not being able to ride. lol As for the mileage on the tire, for a Dunlop 208, it had about 5500 miles on it which is really good IMO as I had the new Quals on the VFR and I got 6500 from them. But I will say those 208's never gave me a hint of slipping. When I get some money built back up for some new boots, I will probably get some A* SMX-Plus boots. They look like they have some plastic around the ankle area for better protection.

Speed, you have a center stand, so it's not too much work to take off the tire and just bring that. The shop will likely get to it faster if they are busy.

Vman, glad your still here with us. Going down is a major ego buster. Especailly to be out of work too. I've been there too. In fact im just getting the VFR put back together from low-siding it. One thing i have learned from my crash is the importance of GREAT gear. Not good gear, but GREAT gear. Not to rag on your gear, but those Alpinestar boots leave lots of room for improvement. I was wearing a very similar Setup boot, and i really jacked my ankles up good too. I now wear the best boots $ could buy. The Sidi Vertigo Corsa's have the external ankle brace system that "should" limit flexation of the ankle. Pricey, but im not going thru what i just went thru, and what your going thru again !

Anyway,........ heal up well, and enjoy the time off best you can. At this point all you can do is make the most of it.

p.s. whats the condition of the front tire after the accident ? Still holding air or did it actually blow ?

Tori: Will never know, the rim is broken as shown in the pics. In fact both rims are destroyed. I am thinking about the Sidi boots, but right now I need to heal up. :)

AHHH, now i see it. (thought that was the rear wheel)

Yeah, take your time with the healing. These boots are spendy anyway.... so just keep your eye on a nice used pair on ebay.

Next week at MotoGP i'll be buying some high end gloves.

Vin, (I was wondering where you had been).

    1. Glad you are ALIVE.
    2. Glad it was not the VFR.
    3. Sorry to hear you are a type 1 on top of everything else.:frown: That's a rough deal. Watch that meter, man!!

Please do not try to do too much too soon!! Take it from me, brother a non-type 1 kind of guy with a plate and 6 screws in my ankle thanks to a bad parachute landing fall (PLF) on a windy day. I insisted on deploying to Afghanistan just 2 months after surgery. My ankle was not let in on the decision-making process. He got me back, though. Made recovery all the more painful and longer. Take time to heal! Man. Roll a cold beer bottle over the affected area at least oh, I dunno, 12 times a day or so.

    Take 'er easy, man.

Oh dude, I am really sorry to hear you went down, and had to sell your VFR. It always turns my stomach when I hear someone on a bike went down. It makes me think and go over information of the situation to learn what happened so I can learn from it. I really hope you heal up well. I don't have the money to give you some financial help, but I can give you my best wishes. So.... I wish you well dude, so that you may heal up, get back to work, and most important get back on two wheels. Take care, Scott

    Vinny,
Sorry to hear about your crash. Glad you're doing reasonably well.
Many years ago I had a rear tire on my 750 that I was trying to squeeze every last mile out of. Checked it every day for signs of REALLY needing replacement, other than the huge flat bald strip down the center. Anyway, at about 70 on the freeway one night it went through to the tube. It lost air slowly enough that I was able to keep the bike upright and glide to a stop.
Anyway, that's my horror story on bad tires.
Hope you're well enough to be back on two wheels soon.
    Dean

Thanks for all the wished guys. The wrist seems to be healing well. It only hurts when I try to rotate it in the cast. lol. As for the ankle, I think that's gonna take a while to heal. I remember when I raced mx that I went down in a corner (lowside). My foot caught under the bike and I went over top of it. Ended up pulling some muscles in it. I took the week of because I had an NMA qualifier the next weekend. It took a long time before my ankle felt right. I could walk and talk with it, but if I moved it the wrong way ther was that twinge of pain. But thats been 23 years since it happened. I still pray that no surgery will be needed. I am not looking forward tothat prospect. Anyway, I will be back on two wheels soon enough. If not before the end of this riding season, then definately in time for next year. :thumb:

hard lines vinny, made all the worse by not really knowing the cause and am sure you need self righteous threads like the proverbial hole in the head. congratulations on walking ( well hobbling) away from such a big one. wishing you a speedy recovery. conor.

Thanks, Conor. Yeah, I got one or two lectures on how to ride already. lol. Like after 26 years, I haven't learned anything. lmao. Anyway, I am working toward a full recovery as fast as I can. my next doc appt is Aug 3rd when my wrist cast will com off and when I hope the doc will continue to not want to operate. Not knowing the cause is sometimes just the way is it. The group I ride with had a rider go down last week, totaled his bike too, but we got it on video. Upon watching it, we could see no obvious reason fir his back end breaking loose. He wasn't on the throttle, the gass had not been chopped either. Closest I can guess is that maybe he was just a tad farther leaned over than before. But it happened, he is ok, no injury. I look at it as a risk of choosing to be involved in this type of activity. Might not be true, but sometimes I feel things just happen. (actually, I think it was gremlins, lol)
