New early 20 something kid just hired @ work a few weeks back; ran out & bought a used(unsure of the year) CBR954RR. Today he rolls in in a tank top, shorts & flip flops; no helmet etc, etc, etc. I walked up to him & asked, "you ride like that" very sarcastically to which he replied a chuckle that would rival Bevis & Butthead "yeah man all the time". To which I retorted, "your a f$%ing idiot aren't you", his response same stupid chuckle "yeah, I guess so". There's one born every minute isn't there, @ least he's young he might have a few good organs left to donate:rip:

Well, he at least admits it. I just found out a local rider went downlast night. He was wearing a helmet at least, but that is all the protection he had as he was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. I have been told he now has 3rd degree burns, from the road I guess. It's so tragic that people care so little for their bodies. At jacket and jeans are better protection than skin if you can't afford some good gear. And there are even some Denim-type riding pants out there if you can't affor leather to textile.

If you have to explain the importance of gear to someone, it is (most likely) a lost cause.

Why wear gear when you can look cool like these folks (ok, some girls look hot, but not after they go down they won't)?

The picture with the rider on the Repsol bike is not that bad. In a typical slide, jeans will last about 8 feet. That's so low you might as well wear shorts.

I'm guessing that rider is like most and doesn't have armored pants only a jacket. So he's wearing all the protective gear he owns.

I have been guilty if I am going less than 3 or 4 miles of riding in a T-shirt (speed limits in bristol RI are like 25 mph tops, with traffic, that means 10). But anytime I am going for a cruise or going somewhere, I have the gear on.

That kid that wipes out looks like bad news, is that car parked or approaching? Sucks there, looks like he panicked, stood it up to brake, and just lost it.

I SINCERELY hope you are joking.:eek:  I would never, ever, think that a good denim jean is basically only as good as a pair of shorts. leather is best, then textile, then reinforced denim, then regular denim, then shorts/being naked way at the bottom in squidville.

I am not sure about the 8 foot typical wear limit for jeans you have. There are many variables, such as surface you as sliding on, speed, type of get-off, how you are sliding/rolling, however, a good pair sturdy denim jeans is always better than shorts. I have had a get off in jeans years ago (I was 17) and I thanked the lord I at least had denim jeans on. My legs would have been cut up nasty. Now go splash some water in your face and get these evil thoughts out of your head! That kind of thinking will just give you the option for more bloodloss and skin graph.

I guess it all comes down to it being your body, and do with it as you please.

I guess I should have specified - sliding at speed - unless you have armored pants on, the difference between shorts and jeans is negligible.

According to David Hough, "If you go down wearing jeans with no additional leg protection, the cotton will grind away to skin within about five feet of sliding."

"competition-weight cowhide will slide for something like 80 to 100 feet before grinding through"

    http://www.soundrider.com/archive/safety-skills/crash_padding-pt1.htm

You may have heard David's name before. He wrote the book “Proficient Motorcycling”

To sum it up, my opinion is at any speed over 20 mph, there is relatively no difference between jeans and shorts.

Personally, I'm looking at those ICON knee protectors that go under my pants. But I haven't read any "crash-tested" reviews yet.

I can personally say that there is a difference being in accident with jeans on, regardless of speed. Of course if you are doing 100 you are probably f**ked anyways, but the way I see it, the more material between you and the road the better. Do not think that I am well protected in jeans, only better than without any. Right now, I am wearing Cortech reinforced denim for my ride to work (10 miles each way). They have reinforced seat, seams, and padding the knees. No way are they as good as leather, but better than your basic pair of jeans.

First thing that I have personally seen in an accident with shorts (khaki/surf) is that they "ride up" exposing your buttocks to the pavement. Even if pants are only good for 8 feet in a slide, that is 8 feet that my skin will not be grinding away on the road.

Try looking at the cortech jeans, and see what you think.

    Good point.

I am more concerned with the impact - rather than the slide. I feel that more damage occurs during the impact.

I too have personally seen a rider go over the handlebars around 80. Nylon jogging pants, old pair of sneakers, t-shirt, helmet, and fingerless armored gloves was his attire. Let's just say the only places he didn't get any damage was the helmet and hands. He went about 80 feet, his bike went 150 feet. He lost a shoe on impact.

where'd ya get the photos from.. someone's porch-cam along the dragon?

The only place I've seen more squid is during Senior Week at Ocean City, Maryland when High School seniors go to celebrate how mature they are after graduation. It is like a squid-in-heat display of who can do more mate-attracting-stunts with with less stuff on.

MD has a helmet law, so the only other items needed are flip-flops, shorts, and tatoos.. they come out at night with all the led lights.

BZ... you get these in Delaware?

Did anyone see the article in "Motorcyclist Magazine" Crashers Anonymous (June '07)? If not, it would be well worth your time to find a leftover issue. It had page after page of idiots in action, all taking place on the Dragon. The dragon is an equal opportunity road. It'll crash idiots as well as innocent bystanders.:caked:

I got most of them from forums here and there. I think the most came from squidbusters, as I used to browse around their site from time to time. I think that the majority of those pics were from Penn. The one with guy crashing into the car in a four part series was originally from Killboy.com. They were just in motorcyclist and hang out on the dragon all the time taking pics.

Yeah, some of those pics were hilarious. Did you see the one of the Harley guy who waved at the camera like a stud then dragged some of his parts and levered his bike up into a nice crash?

Check this clown out on the dragon.
