Hi. Has anyone mounted a GPS or cell phone holder (to use GPS app) to their VFR???

How did you do it and what holder did you use? Pictures would be great too.

    Thanks

I bolted the RAM handlebar mount to the gas tank bolts. Got longer tank bolts (40mm ones) in Stainless from Cycle gear (all the hardware stores had steel which started to rust). Works great and keeps my phone steady no matter where the bars are turned. I use the x-grip to hold the phone itself and the shorter arm (came with the x-grip).

May be a little late to reply but this is where I mounted mine
i have an Iphone 6 and it hold it perfectly. The phone holder is adjustable so you should have any issues.

    Nice bike Hawkhound
Ya know I've been thinking about this GPS thing, but there's something to all this tech that bugs me. What happen to a wing and a prayer anyway.. Meaning who needs a GPS? granted they are nice in there own way knowing where you are is sorta cool. But biking is an adventure, do your per planning ride and take off, no time for starring at a GPS while riding, dude pack it a way, if ya get lost by some chance, then pop out your smart phone, but man I don't know. If you've ever traveled any real distance, I mean like several thousand miles, then you appreciate the ability to see your route easily and quickly. I've covered the country using maps in tank bag covers, and that can be an exercise in frustration at times. Pulling up to an intersection and knowing, without having to check your map and hope that you read it right, that you turn left and not right is wonderful. And not having to backtrack 20 miles because that cool looking squiggly line didn't connect up with that other cool looking squiggly line like you thought it did.
Also, I use mine to map out routes in areas that I've never been in so I can take advantage of the really good roads, and avoid the really crappy ones.

See now, there's an answer right there. I get it, just sometimes less is more is all just saying. that and as a whole IMO the human race is relying on tech way to much.

Thanks. I like the tech stuff. Makes it so much easier when traveling to an unfamiliar place or on a really long trip. I installed a SENA S20 in my helmet and I can stream Anything from my phone. Which is awesome. Plus I can connect up to eight different riders. The phone GPS. also helps out with identifying heavy traffic. No splitting lanes here on the east coast. Just my 2cents.

I was always old school. Don't need no damn gps, or a map back in those days. I'm not lost, I just haven't been here before :). Then late one night I made a wrong turn onto unknown to me private property 5 states away in unfamiliar territory. Will never know what I stumbled onto, but I'm here to tell you it wasn't anything I ever want to experiance again. As I stopped to get my bearings and figure where to go next on this ever winding road to nowhere, three big dudes came out of the tree line and began to come my direction. At a distance of 15 feet or so they ask, what the f#%k I thought I was doing there and where I was going. Not only did they look like hulk Hogans brothers, I noticed one was armed. I simply said wrong turn and hauled ass back to where id made my wrong turn. It was dark and I'm sure something really wrong was going on in them sticks. Back then there was no cell phones. At the time I was just traveling with no destination. Id take 3 weeks and just go back in my younger days. Sleeping bag and a tent. I have gps on my bike now days. I also cc now also, so I'm no techy by any means but I do like the fact I have options today.

It is funny that this should come up at this time. I just cancelled my iPhone data and went to Verizon pay as you go on a flip phone. The one thing I knew I would miss is the mapping! I am terrible with directions. Now I have to plan my trips with more detail or I will be lost forever. I get N/S/E/W, and as a matter of fact did a jaunt on Sunday where I just went west for an hour then found a major route to come back east. But that is easy on major NS / EW routes. As soon as I turn off the main route I am dead in the water until I come back to it, and that is extremely stressful. I also ended up in a more seedy area that I imagined, but I suppose I digress.

Okay are we going to have a map reading masterclass?

Ironically the wife loves maps and can read them fluently. It pays to marry smarter. Next year she rides with me (I did not allow this on riding season 1 of my life.) She'll have the map so we will be just fine.

Mounting a GPS in full view can lead to not having one when lunch is over. If the only time one were used ie stopped at an intersection yadayada that would be great, but we know that ain't the case.

Besides If I had one on my bike, I'd miss my Oprah re-runs and my portable Pac-man when the scenery is boring.

Anyone mount a GPS or Cell Phone holder? Not a magnetic bag but a bolt on ho...

Phone mounts are cool, however, I personally believe that they are not worth the risk (from falling impact, water damage, etc) and to top it off, using your phone GPS constantly hogs data. Long trips make you go into data overages big time. I only have 2 gb, so it is a no go for me except short trips.

To me, a Garmin is much better suited for this purpose. No data overages to worry about, no personal data if someone takes it, and usually a more secure mount. Not to mention usually cheaper (depending on model) than a replacement iphone.

I had never considered this. Looking at something inexpensive, may I use a nĂ¼vi 65LM on my bike?

The last bike GPS I bought was a Garmin Nuvi 760 which I got off Craigslist for $65 and I got it for my son. It's not waterproof, but that's not that big of a deal. It uses a more secure power connection than a standard USB port, and is a decent size.

I've been using a Garmin Nuvi 750 for 5 years and it still works just fine. The screen is getting scratched up but it still works, even with gloves on.
