Hey rjgti. What would you expect to see as a healthy output at 5000rpm?

    Thanks.

So, just checked: 54 to 56v AC at 4000rpm, 60 to 61v AC at 5000rpm.

was the engine at operating temp as the stator can break down when warm. if so then output looks fine

Yup, it was up to temperature. Do you know what it is that can cause stators to fail only at higher temperatures?

actually the insulation breaks down under heat and cause internal winding shorts.

    "Thermal expansion"

"actually the insulation breaks down under heat and cause internal winding shorts."

Well, I reckon as I could imagine thermal expansion causing the resin-stuff they coat the windings in to open and split as it expands due to the temperature increase, I can see how it might be that you are both right...

Either way, can you see a way that it might be that my RR is the culprit even though it seems to check out under test? If the stator's output is ok then I struggle to see what else it could be :confusion:

When the electric field is high enough a dielectric may suddenly loose its property of non-conduction, permanently or temporarily, showing an electrical breakdown

Lol buddy your are trying way too hard to sound smart here. Trust me its not complicated. The bike heats up. Things expand. Clearances get tight. Parts rub. You get a crack in the insulation and an electrical short develops. Then you turn the bike off, it cools down. The parts contract and the short opens. That's it. Sorry, I am an ME/EE and I'm not impressed with your forum engineering, but I am having a good laugh at it, so keep it up if you want.
