Unimpeachable sources have it that SOW's favorite tune is the old gospel "Go Down Moses".

I do not know what "JP" refers too.

Sledgehammer - You hit one of them (no pun) but this is a different song. Listen to the "Not Fragile" album by BTO. I am not an album person but this is one I can listen through at any time. Maybe it is just the guitarist in me.

Like all of these and Jeff Beck is one of my favorites. I have seen Satriani about 5 times and Beck at least 10 times. I got press passes to Eric Clapton's first Crossroads festival in Texas. 2 days of most of the greatest in the world. Have tons of photos of Clapton. Gibbons, Buddy Guy, BB King, Santana, Lang, Jimmy Ray Vaughn, Jeff beck, Eric Johnson and many more sometimes all playing together.
Lately been listening to JJ Grey a local Florida guy with tons of soul. He describes his music as Florida swamp back porch music. Also listening to Tab Benoit, a Louisiana blues man with a great voice.

Listened to a bunch of Rancid on my way to work ... oddly ... Kickstart my Heart (Motley Crue) somehow ended up in the shuffle and was the last track to play as I pulled into my office. :)

I have not gone to many concerts. Not sure exactly why. Maybe my aversion to crowds, or that I just prefer to play rather than watch someone else play.

Jeff Beck in some respects is the best guitarist. Most people will not understand because he does not produce music that the masses listen to. Jeff Beck makes the guitar sing like a human voice. He can get any sound out of the instrument at any time on command. And he was doing these things in the late 60's and 70's. In "I'm Going Down" He does dive bombs and pinch harmonics, only to be made famous by Van Halen years later!

I love ZZ Top. I play many of their album songs. Billy is very interesting. The music and videos they created starting with "Eliminator" fulfilled the artist in Billy. MTV gave him a palette to create an awesome artistic vision.

The slide solo on "Just Got Paid" is one of the best slide solos, or best of any solo. No one talks about it and that burns me up a bit.

You mention Jimmy Vaughn, and I love the T Birds. That white Strat is beautiful. I have a 1973 Strat which was Olympic White but it yellowed over time. I was just debating rubbing it out further to see if I could remove more yellowing and expose more white.

Tab Benoit - "Me and My Guitar" is a GREAT version!

I would bet you are familiar with Savoy Brown. "Tell Mama" among others.

Oh speaking of great modern blues, Tedeschi Trucks - "Made Up Mind." That solo cuts like a razor!

I saw Tedeschi and Derick Trucks once, what a couple they make. Old fan of Savoy too. How about John Mayhall and the Blues Breakers? As far as Jeff Beck goes I think he is on another alien level. He is not the fastest by far but he makes sounds that no human can make. Creating harmonics where they don't exist. He learned to play without a pick from Chet Atkins using finger picks. Beck said it was a disaster and just started using his fingers. Saw him a few months ago, front row! Insane watching him play.
Steve Vai is another freak of nature.
    Surprised you know of Tab.

Thumbs up to Bachman Turner Overdrive - Let it Ride, Rollin Down the Highway. Still like the old stuff like BTO, Credence Clearwater Revival, Doobie Brothers. I'm still spinnin' the vinyl as they say.

Of course, I am a big parrot head too. Been to a couple of his concerts. Can't go wrong with Jimmy.

John Fogerty is awesome! Saw him a few months ago and he still has the voice and an amazing amount of energy. His son played with him.

Personally, I'm a bigger fan of Mark Knopfler and his work. That said, this is one of the best videos on youtube.

While were talking about great guitarists, can't forget UFO and one Michael Schenker

If you like that stuff, check out the Sheepdogs. They're a newer band from Saskatchewan ... very similar to Burton Cummings / BTO era stuff.

I should probably re-listen to John Mayhall. I did not see anything in it years ago, but understand they were influential, and maybe I will feel differently with a re-listen. That has happened many times.

From Guitar World Magazine, one famous person (can't recall) said that Jeff Beck's hands are "the size of a football." It makes sense that a tiny pick would not work for him. There is no doubt one can do many more things playing using the fingers. Rockers must use a pick to duplicate what their heros did on record. I think that is why so few depart from it. Want to play CCR or Judas Priest, well you need to use a pick for those chords. But if you want to step out of the box and play all kinds of unique things, fingerplaying frees the soul.

I like the movie with Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai.

I am in Cleveland and Robert Lockwood Jr. played here for a while. He was Robert Johnson's stepson, and carried on playing that unique fingerstyle until his death. You would have enjoyed his performance (if you haven't seen it.) Haha, I told him "I play guitar, drums, violin, but nothing near your level." He looked at me and said, "You're just a BABY!" (I was in my 30's at the time.)

Forgot to mention John Mayer at the Crossroads festival. I had always thought he was a pop guy but man did he play. BB King invited him on stage to play with him. " Lets bring out some of the young blood". Here are a few photos from the Crossroads festival I took.

Yes, pronounced "Back-man" according to Randy Bachman, not "Bock-man" as the pronunciation that became popular.

BTW "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" was a joke to make fun of Randy's stuttering brother. He did not believe a producer who told him, "THIS IS YOUR HIT!"

Whatever happened to Alvino Rey and his talking steel guitar?

I heard he was reincarnated as Peter Frampton.

How come all the guitar heroes mentioned are white dudes?

Did you miss Robert Lockwood in my post? He preserved Robert Johnson's style until his death in 2006.
