So much to say! I like to ride because no matter how bad of a day I had I know I can jump on my VFR and all my problems, worries, responsibilities, and stress disappear. Riding really calms me down and it is just such a rush.

That's a pretty good acticle, and yeah freedom is part of it, but alot of it is while riding everything is now in the moment. Nothing in the future counts now, no planning for that new job, no bills, no dumbass girlfriend, whatever, nothing. I am in the environment, fully exposed. What you do now matters whether you live or die. Keep a cool head and de-stress unwind, live for now. I am alive! Tomorrow doesnt matter. Its generally the same whether I'm just meandering cruising 45MPH on my Valkyrie or burning hard thru my favorite twistys on the viffer machine.
I guess you do call that freedom..

    Thats a pretty good someup.

    I enjoied the article.
    This line:
"Donning my helmet triggers a pre-recorded message telling me I better be alert if I don't want to end up as a hood ornament. "
put into words well one of the feelings when I prep for a ride.
Thinking about it, a powerful "feelings following action" response is when I am in the early engagement of front and rear brakes while pulling the clutch. Having my eyes glued on an escape hole, or not seeing one:eek: , and having these three appendages beginning an evasive manuver is an automatic response that usually doesn't bring emotion until a few seconds after the fact. The well-up afterward is a pretty good high. Many people wouldn't understand that I don't reflect on that in a negative way. It's part of the experience and therefore part of why I ride.
Other things that could get wordy to describe the underlying feelings:
Cool morning rides through tufts of fog
A little boot or peg scrape in a well executed turn
Wheel lift upon throttling out of a tight uphill curve
    Etc.
Situation to situation positive commentary on riding would take weeks.
I'm sure there'll be some good stuff in this thread.

I think it would be easier to list the least pleasant things about riding, like 3 day old road kill on a hot July day, hail, chicken farms, etc.... It's funny though, I have to agree with Vlad, it's all part of the experience and just makes it more vivid.

I ride simply because it makes me feel ALIVE. I feel closer to God as I experience His creation in the saddle of a motorcycle.:amen:

the best part of living 32 miles from work is riding to and from work.

Andy Goldfine is right when he says that riding invigorates you for the rest of the rest when you ride to work.

I actually feel sorry for the cagers.

Part of me would love to ride to work, but dealing with I-75 traffic full of trucks - semis and some open dump truck type puts me off. Also riding for maybe 30 minutes and parking it for 8 hours just doent seem that appealing.
-If I gonna ride gimme at least a couple hours in the saddle.

Not only freedom, but also, at least for me, it makes me feel like I am one with the environment. I can actually see more of the world around me when riding than when I am in my cage. IMO, there is not a better feeling than feeling like you are actually a part of the world.

I've gotta tell you...when I'm in a cage it makes me feel tense. I don't feel like I am as aware of what's going on. On a bike, I feel like I am more a part of the world...rather than a passenger on it.

Having visited your fine state, with the traffic you got I would be tense in a cage too!

VERY well said sir!!! Ditto! Not to mention I can get around much faster than these cagers in traffic. I just bought an 07 tacoma pickup...it is one month old and still only 300 miles on it. I had to drive it for two days last week when I worked on my brake problem. that was a loooooong two days...I felt like I was a hamster in a cage....helpless....much the opposite of free!:ballchain:

    I ride to keep........

the clown voices in my head quiet!

None the less, a great read. I've seen that on several forums, and it's always worth a gander.

A bad day riding (rain, hot, cold,) is better than a great day at work!
