I'll be hitting the big 50 next year and love riding more now than I ever did. Starting to get in better shape too and I think that helps when getting older. I was always in shape, it was round and that's a shape.
I think that being in shape and exercising will certainly help with riding, any suggestions on what specifically are good exercises to do from some of the older guys that have "been there and done that"?

Mountain biking and weight training. You can do this well into your 80's.

Push ups and curls. To start with, 10 reps, 3 sets, 2 minutes between sets. Start out with lighter weights. You'll find yourself wanting to use more weight as it becomes easier.

I just started doing this last month and am feeling great.

BowFlex half hr daily, leaning against wall both front an backwards and lifting arms above my head really helps stretch your traps
    (especially since surgery)...plus sit ups.
Half to get a bike fer sure for cardio.

I, too, came back to riding in my late forties (51 now) and have jumped back in with both feet. People can say whatever they like about mid-life crises, I feel better about my riding skills now than I ever have. I now have the experience, knowledge and temperament that I didn't in my younger days. However, back then I had the fortitude to do the 900 mile days, something I don't have the strength for now. That's okay. Just did a 400 miler a couple of weekends ago and it didn't hurt much. I'm finding that I will probably need to work up to those mega mileage days I used to enjoy on a sportbike.

And besides, that VFR750 will scorch most any Corvette.

60 in March, eh? Excellent duccman. Gives me hope that I'll still be throwing a leg over her (er...the bike, and hopefully, the wife too) in nine years. Life wouldn't be worth living if I couldn't do either...he he.

I've been trying to concentrate on strengthening my core because that's what seems to get the biggest workout on those long days in the saddle. Forearms and shoulders, biceps and triceps all get a consistent weight lifting regimen.

Totally agree on this. I had the first Katana 750 when it came out. 130mph or 2nd gear burn out wheelies everywhere I went. Got rid of it before I did some serious damage. I picked up my garage find 87 700 a couple of months ago and I am soooo relaxed because I no longer fee like I'm plugging my d#$k in when I ride. :glee:

The Katana was a sweet bike. Lots of power and looked great. However, it seems like the VFR likes to handle a bit better than I remember the Katana doing. Maybe I'm just getting old...:glee:

Turned 60 October last year. Got my viffer in March and have put lots of miles in and intend to do lots more as this bike is a keeper. My wife supports this addiction fortunately and is a willing pillionwhen she has the time. Oft enough she kicks me out of the house -- go take a ride she says and off I go.

Bike or wife, bike or wife, hmmmmm tough question that I luckily don't have to answer . I got the best of both worlds.

^trick is to get the "whole" motorcycling/wrenching thing out of the way early in the relationship. My wife knows that my 91 is my "First Wife" I think in some sort of whacko way she is jealous of that bike. Got other ones, but none have the sense of ownership as that bike has. Turning the big 50 in a few months, I wouldnt turn down a "Busa" as a b-d present :pound: gota stay in shape to ride, live to ride, ride to live. Ride to work, make money and spend it on your bike/bikes..

I'm in my 40's and a novice rider, but highly sensitive to body issues due to chronic headaches and back pain. My perception since I began this sport is that the legs are the core of sport bike riding. Recall those early twentieth century videos of armed services personnel standing in place, bending the legs, then standing back up? This is a fantastic exercise. The funny thing is that the more weight you have, the more beneficial this "standing leg press" is.

Old guy thread seems more appropriate for my first post..... ;>)

49 and on my second VFR, a '10 1200F. First was an '87 700F2 which left my stable with 20K miles.

While I feel old every morning I don't let that get in the way of tossing a leg over my ride, hence I feel younger by lunch on ride days.

Note: most of my favorite bikes were from the 80's but I sure appreciate the brakes, tires, and balance of the modern machine.
