The KN oil filters are more or less just rebadged Hi-Flo filters made by Champion Labortories, but with a nut welded to the end. They are nothing really special, you aren't doing your bike any real favors. With the KN filter you are paying for a cool name and a nut welded to the end, because they sure do not filter any better than your average filter.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Purolator Pure One line of oil filters. They have decent construction, but more importantly, EXCELLENT FILTERING CAPABILITIES. That is after all the point of oil filters, to filter out the 10-20 micron particulates that are responsible for engine wear.

There are two Purolator Pure Ones that fit our bike
PL1460 (which is about an inch longer than standard, for extra capacity and flow)
PL14612 (Factory size, for an easier fit)

I have deleted my evap canister and have more room down there, so I run the larger PL14610...

Napa platinum is the best especially when using syn oil-designed for that type of oil. It flows better and filters better has great dirt holding too and seals well.
My second choice would be the pure one purculator but the flow rate is not as good as the napa platinum , I think the napa gold might be second best then third pure one.
Someone one did mention this several times-MEEEEEEEEEEE!

Yeah I don't think I've read anything in any studies about Napa filters and I'm not sure that the VFR even needs anymore flow. But if it needed anymore flow, it would surely get it from the added filter media surface area of the inch longer filter.

But, other Canadians might make the same same trip a bit faster, or stop along the way to screw up the calculations. You need to add speed your going weather you stopped or not and distance tooo. to be correct. I might say the same thing like going to RI is five hours, but I am far from being correct or not.

too thick media can slow up oil flow-that is usually not a good idea-that's why syn media is the best-the oil filter maker can more precisely filter the oil-paper or paper and blend come up a little short.
I did a complete study of oil filters-very confusing info, but I went out and bought a purculator pure one and the napa platinum that I am running now in my car and VFR-. I looked inside and held both in my hand-leaves no doubt the napa platinum is the best. Pure one has a major problem-the shell is way too thin even though it is mostly likey good enough-I don't like a super thin sheet of steel-napa is twice as thick-it also looks better made just by looking inside.

I hate to come across negative on this but you have just been given the slip on this. Your concerns have been passed on from who you were dealing with, who was expected to answer to you, onto a department that is highly unlikely to respond to you what their testing results were. They don't really care what you think because they are not dealing with you. They don't need to reply back to you because I don't see anywhere where Mr. Bryan Vallejo, Product Specialist, K&N Engineering, Inc. has asked them to do so. And he has done all that he is going to do.

I would be inclined to get back to this guy and ask him to find out what the results of the testing were, and report back to you.

    MHO.

I didn't really even expect to get a new filter. I won't even put another one on the VFR but will use it on my track bike simply because the nut is drilled and takes seconds to safety wire. It might be interesting to email him in the future and ask what their "research" found out. lol

Thread revival. The free filter I got back from K&N I put on my CBR 1000 track bike. 2nd session out yesterday I come out of the corner leading into the back straight and the next thing I know I'm sideways! I did not ham fist it and thank god I kept the throttle dialed. It kept spinning and finally straightened out. If i chopped it I would have high sided to the moon. Went straight to the pits leaking oil. Filter was leaking. Upon inspection the O ring looked pinched, a line in it. Found another filter from a friend (another fucking KN 204!) put it on and ran the rest of the day. Checked it before and after every session and no leaks but I am done with K&N!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll go OEM and put a strap on it. A friend on another forum said he knew someone that just had this same thing happen to him at the track last week.

I read this thread a few weeks ago and I immediately dismissed the alleged issue with the K&N204, which is what I have installed on my VFR. This morning, I decided to ride to the office and I noticed a burning smell after starting the bike. The smell never quite went away. I assumed some debris got on the headers. Well, no. In fact, the oil filter is leaking. Now, I am 55 years old, and have done every oil change on every 2 and 4 wheel vehicle I have ever owned, and i have never seen a filter leak. Further inspection revealed the filter was tight. So, there you have it. Another leak for this filter. I never would have believed it.

LOL I gota chime in, I mean why not right.. Oil filter, Wix #51358, Since oem isn't what it use to be, WIX wins hands down. Now as far as K-N airfilters go, I haven't found a better one yet, if I do I'll switch, with over 160,000 miles on four VFRs showing great results, can't be wrong.

Manufacturers of all sorts of things, provided the orders are large enough will label and even customize products. Might there be a factory somewhere in some part of the world that cranks out oil filters.

As a corollary, check out "all" the outfits that are selling those Chinese made fairing kits. Same outfit? I think so.

Champion Labs makes filters for K&N, HiFlo and many others. It gets so complicated and convoluted it is near impossible to trail. Depending on what year, what bike or car the same filter could have been made by 3 different manufacturers. Even high end Ducs OEM filters of some years are farmed out to Champion labs I have read. Bikes are very different than cars and their by pass vales operate at lower pressures than cars so you have to be careful when using a car intended filter on a bike. Like Mobil 1 and Puralators. Just because a filter is of good construction, has great combo of synthetic and fiber material, great flow ect does not mean it is best for a bike. There are a million articles and analysis of oil and filters over the years like this one. http://www.peterverdone.com/archive/oilfilter2.htm. An OEM filter will have the correct bypass pressure valve. I think I'm just going to stick with OEM. It may or may not be the best filter but I know it works. I change my oils very often and use magnetic plugs and thats the end of the file for me on this subject.

I can't say one way or the othere on the oil delivery aspects between cars and bike because simply put, I have no knowledge on that. But what I do know for a fact, if you buy Bosch filters, the parts book lists the exact same filter for my bike as for the 2003 & 1010 Honda Civics. But I hear you on the OEM filters. The engineers picked that one. Until a few years ago, that is what I ised on mine when I was racking up those rediculous miles on mine.

Probably the smaller engines like in the Civic run similar pressures as bikes and can be swapped. If the by pass valve opens at too high of a pressure for an engine you are not using the filter at all.
Do you use magnetic oil plugs? They help.
