Well, the battery is still charging. We were gone all afternoon so I unplugged it while we were gone (just a 1 amp trickle). It's up to 13.2 or so now. I'll unplug it tonight and let it rest, then see what the voltage is tomorrow. Meanwhile, here are the before/after videos (if I can figure out how to post them from youtube).

Maybe tomorrow I can find time to do some more work.

    Cheers,
    Glenn

    Hi folks,

OK, the battery sat off the charger for a week. It was losing approx 0.05V or a bit more every day - not much, really. Went down to 12.6 from 13.2 (freshly unplugged, about 12.8 or 12.9 after resting overnight).

I put it on the trickle charge for an hour or so yesterday while I checked the stator and R/R resistance - both good, can't remember numbers now. Then I started it with everything connected to let it warm up for the stator VAC test. Shut down, unplugged stator, restarted and go 70 VAC at 5000 RPM on all 3 pairings. Good. The original 3 yellow wire plug was hot after the initial warm-up running. The new plug that came with the new R/R was not as hot, but that is subjective as the side panel was still on so I couldn't get good access to really feel it. When I am satisfied that this new R/R set-up is reliable, I'll eliminate the original 3 yellow wire plug.

When I installed the new R/R, I had a trip planned. To hedge my bets I connected the new R/R using good quality 1/4" spade terminals. Then I made an adapter harness with matching spade terminals so I could plug in the "spare" old R/R in just a few minutes, if needed, on the side of the road. I'll make these connections permanent by eliminating these spade terminals also when I know everything's good.

One curious thing, though - the old R/R allowed for a running voltage of 14.8 max volts, where as the new one maxes out at 13.8V. It does maintain at least mid-13V at idle, though. Is that the way it's supposed to be?

    Thanks for your opinions, guys.

    Cheers,
    Glenn

stator voltage sounds good. You said the "new" plug. So I'm assuming the end half on the stator wires is the original? If that's the case, you need to clip that off right now, and trim the yellow wires back probably at least an inch or more until you see good color copper. Solder in the new R/R right away. Don't wait.

Your 13.8 volts could simply be the state of the battery, or different make R/R

Yes, actually there are 2 plugs in the 3 yellow wire circuit now - the original that sits in the frame bracket and the new one that came on the new R/R (you can see it in the pictures in my previous post). Here's a link to the R/R auction so you can see the plugs http://www.ebay.com/itm/331440222521?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT . I guess you can count the spade terminals that I put there for emergency use as a THIRD plug! That was temporary and they will be removed and wires soldered.

It was the original one in the frame bracket that I said was getting hot. Yes, the original end half that comes from the stator. That is the one we normally cut out and solder the wires for the 3 yellow wire fix. It gets hot, but not enough to have discolored the plug yet. It will be cut out and wires soldered, though.

Yes, maybe the max voltage is the battery. I think I have a spare battery that I might be able to connect for a charging test to see if the max voltage changes. I say might because the + & - are backwards on that one and not sure if there's enough cable.

Anyway, sounds like you think I'll be OK.

    Thanks,
    Glenn

+1 above solder and heatshrink those wires

2 plugs in the circuit?! You're going the wrong way, lol. NO PLUGS IN THE YELLOW CIRCUIT.

This should be your yellow wires:

Then fit a voltmeter so you can always monitor your voltage, just might prevent you getting stranded on the side of the road
