    Hi all,

I've got an 1989 VFR fk and I'm completely stuck.

I was in need of getting it on the road, but after my other bike snapping a cam chain on the way home from work I'm now desperate to get it sorted as it's my only transport.

So the problem is this, I have no electrics.

I had a melted starter solonoid plug that has been replaced

I have 12v at the starter solonoid on the red wire, I've traced the wire to the ignition plug and I have continuity.

I can start the bike by shorting the solonoid terminals

    I bought a new battery.

    ....still nothing.

Problem all started when my indicators would not flash, figured it was faulty, I'm now starting to wonder if I have an earth problem, but I can still get the bike to start shorting the solonoid

Can anyone please help. Many thanks in advance for any advice, I really hope I've posted this in the right thread . Sean.

P.S. no lights on the dash, nothing....

Your cdi unit is probably destroyed due to a malfunction in the rectifier.

what he said ^^^^^ is incorrect as you state the bike will run. measure voltage at fuses with key on

Thanks for the replies. I've 13+ volts on all fuses. Connecting volt meter from batt terminal to fuse. If that's the best way to do it?

    Thanks again for the help

measure to frame ground on all fuses. this will show a ground issue if any are low or 0 volts

The fact that by jumping across the solonoid and it starting indicates that the solonoid is probably toast or the start button is failing. You need to test the wire from the starter button and see if you have 12 volts in the plug at the solonoid with the ignition switched on and the starter button pushed

Sorry to sound dumb, but do you mean setting the multimeter to ohms then negative probe to frame and positive to fuse?

now you know you have a ground issue, check main ground from battery to frame

That would explain the lack of flashing my indicators were doing before everything died and I thought it was a faulty unit.

I've cleaned the battery wire were it attaches to the frame and the frame plus I've replaced a couple washer and still nothing.

Sorry Normk I missed your post. Would this cause me to have no electrics at all? I've replaced the starter solonoid as it was in a pretty sorry state and I tested it before I put it on the bike, the old one worked fine, but had melted.

Also I have 12v at the red wire, from ignition to solenoid

So will check the start button, but could you explain how it would cause the entire electrical system to not respond. Thanks in advance for your help

I do not have a wiring diagram for your bike, if norm does maybe he will post it up. do to the fact that you have multipil system failures leads me to the ground side. DID YOU HAVE KEYON FOR LAST TEST I ASKED FOR? very important

Ok so you tell us that by jumping across the solonoid you can get the bike started? If this is the cases your ignition circuit is working. Them you need to test with a test light at the plug on the solonoid to see if you have power there when you turn the ignition on and press the start button, then let us know, have to do one step at a time, you obviously have other problems that need working through one at a time
