Believing everything that a painter says is about as silly as believing everything that is posted on the internet. Historically "pearl" , was herring scales suspended in nitro cellulose lacquer and used as an under coat for "candy" colors. The candy coat was also NC lacquer and was specifically a glaze.

Now, "pearl" is much like "metalflake" (not to be confused with rock bands that are always late). The particulate size can be sized. For the most part, the particles are of mica.

Bottom line here is that the "pearl" can be lacquer and the topcoat (clearcoat) can be one of many types of two component catalytic coatings or even one of the waterbourrne clears. The water bourne clears are acrylic single component coatings much improved since the problematic clearcoat failures on many cars from the 1980s and 1990s, ect. Nobody it seems was exempt. Saw a really nice Mercedes 500 the other day that looked like a Canadian that just got back from a vacation in sunny Florida and forgot his sunblock ..

At least I am not stupid enough to pay $400 for paint that falls off, so I have money to spend on more important things like Boston larger:biggrin-new:
