I had the same problem with my 84 VF750F. When I first had the bike, I would use the passenger grab handle instead of the frame to lift the bike onto the centerstand. This bent the mounting brackets and caused the misalignment. Some careful bending should do the trick.

Allyance, my tailpiece is also higher on the left, over the brake light, when viewed from the rear. I've seen the same thing in pics of other 700/750s from 83-85. I'm starting to think it's how they were when they came off the line. Not sure if it's a twist in the plastic or a mount being slightly off on the frame....I haven't dug into it to see.

Same kinda thing for the stripes on the right side cover to tailpiece not lining up. The plastic is lined up but the stripes are off. On the 84 models the stripes are higher on the side cover than the tailpiece. Pics of 83 models I've seen it looks like the stripes are lower on the side cover than the tailpiece. I haven't really gone looking for pics of the 85 model to compare.

Maybe we are just seeing flaws that were present when the bikes were built.

My right side cover also sticks out too far in the corner where the tank, seat and side cover meet. I can push it in with my hand but of course it springs right back out. It seems to be a slight warpage in the plastic itself.

Check out the pics in the slideshow from this article, you can see the same twist in the tailpiece (like yours/mine) when viewed from the rear.

That's another cause for the twist I've considered.....because everyone is going to use the passenger handle to get the bike on the centerstand. And yes, when pulling on the handle it does move the tailpiece around.

BTW....welcome to the party!......wait....I was looking at your post count (6) and not your join date (2011)

You can see in both bike pics that the left handle is bent upward a tad. My old one fit nice and snug to the under fender because I never had handles on the bike. All the other 700/750's I've worked on was snug like mine.

Going to work on it tomorrow. Got fork sliders back from powder coaters, but had to have local machine shop clean them to get out all the glass bead grit.

Found my problem, PO had epoxied cracks, and big globs where preventing tail piece to fit around tail light shroud. Now it looks like Grey750F's, except for the love handles.

Thanks to all for your help!!!

I have nothing like you. The tail piece should fit ok. I think hgaynor are right and the problem, in my case, is:

I will try a bit of bending.....

What is the best system to correct this error? What tools should you use?

I bought a used tail piece that matched the paint scheme of the tank I wanted. It has a slight flare to it, but after getting rid of gobs of epoxy it fit fairly well. Ended up bending metal tab on frame up a little to make it fit better, but still not perfect. You just have to fit it best you can.
