I think I fryed my stater on my 84 vf1000f. When I turn the key the bike won't turn over. The only thing that happens is the starter solenoid will click like the switch is closing. I checked the fuse on the solenoid and it looks good.

Has anyone ever taken the starter off. I took off a few mounting bolts but it didn't want to come off. If anyone has information about taking the starter off and possibly rebuilding it please let me know.

You need to wiggle the starter to get it out. There are two bolts that go into the crankcase, take them out, then try to turn and wiggle the starter. It is tight, but it does come out. You can get the rebuild kits from ebay, they work well, but only really apply to the brushes.

You should verify that all battery cables are tight, and that power is actually getting to the starter when you press the button. Do you have power on both sides of the solenoid when you press the starter button? Does the engine turn over if you push start it? You know for sure the engine is not seized up or locked up?
