So, after searching some threads here, it turns out that a 6th gen tank will fit a 5th gen. The front bolts up exactly, the front fairings will need an ever so slight shave for clearance and the rear flange of the 6th gen will jut need to be re-drilled to match the bolt pattern of the 5th gen rear gas tank hinge. So usefull because 6th gen tanks are much easier to find than 5th gen. It makes me even more thankfull for this forum.

Ricky, yes, I am interested in your rear subframe (if it is straight, I already have a bent one!) and your right hand side radiator. Why don't you PM me with some pics of each one and we can go from there?

    Thanks everybody.

Tink may know the answer to this seeing as he married a 5th and 6th gen together.

Good homework on the tank swap.. Tooling up for a whole new tank every couple of years is not good biz. Minor changes in mounting and fitment is mucho better.

I looked up Tink's link to his build and he documented his tank swap very well, so thanks to him. Pays to do your homework.

Thanks again to this forum for being a great clearinghouse of ideas so I don't have to go out on a limb and try this stuff for the first time by myself.

Just to show you how resilient these bikes are, the riders too, in this one, bike vs deer and then tree, deep ditch and rocks, the rider got on and rode this bike from somewhere deep in the unknown roads of north eastern Oregon, to Spokane Washington. It was trailered the rest of the way home, only because we trailered it there.

Amazing for both the bike and the rider. But he could have avoided buggeriung up those staintunes. I could have bought those off him.

    The deer?.... Not so lucky.

Yeah, I ride Oregon a lot. Beautiful country, but hazzardous with deer and free range cattle. I wonder if his was repairable.

Cattle are slow enough that they should be able to be avoided. This deer jumped out of that deep ravine, from a place of seclusion, right into the path of my friend. He hit the deer in mid air. I just can't see any way he could have prevented this other than not to have been riding that road at that time.

    Update:

So here is where I am now. Bike is getting torn down to be rebuilt.

Thanks goodness for the 3rd gen "backup" VFR to keep me riding.

Big thanks to Ricky who is parting out his 5th gen and is sending me his rear sub-frame and right side radiator. New fork seals are going in today, and various parts are on the way from ebay. New plastics from NiceCycle are on the way, and I plan on doing a thorough exam of them and write up when they come in, so I can be the test subject for those.

By the way, I bought a Sealmate fork seal swiper/cleaner for $5 just to see if it worked. If it would work a fork leaking this badly, it would work on any leaky fork seal. And lo and behold,...it works! I will replace the fork seals anyways since I already have new ones sitting on the workbench. But that Sealmate is a must. I am going to use it as a part of routine maintenance. If I had done that before my ride, my VFR would likely be in one piece.

I saw a deer in my car cross a bit in front of me-if you see one-its the other deer that will sneak up and get you.
