Hello again from Ghost.

After a long time away, I wish I was coming back under better circumstances to VFRworld.com
Sadly, I was forced to lay my 87 700F2 down at a broadside of a Lexus. She wasnt paying attention, on the phone, and pulled out. Im fine. The bike, sustained what appeared to be minor injuries, as I rode it home.

Then it gave out.

Water pump was trashed, left side panel pegs were broken, fuel pump cracked and leaking, seal inside the water pump was damaged, water and oil mixed, exhaust clamps on the left were damaged, bent the exhaust, put a hole in the exhaust "Y" pipe, Front Left fairing is scratched, and a small ding on my left handle cap.

Not terrible.

Repaired much, and put her back together, new oil, new water, etc etc.. but. At a loss on the Exhaust.
The supertrapp still functions fine. but the pipe is garbage.

Please comment... Question is: "Should I cut and make new exhaust "Y" pipes, or (since I am having to make new anyway), ditch the stock look, purchase a newer exhaust, and make custom pipes?"

I gotta agree with SOW, (That's just weird.), but I don't know the circumstances, but brakes ALWAYS stop better than sliding the bike.

Yes, I was clicking along about 45-50 mph, when the Lexus pulled out in front of me, with about 12 ft to go. I was on the breaks so hard, I got a little wobbly, and laid it down in the last couple feet. So it was more of a "lay down" than a "slide" Brakes are always kept in good condition just for these circumstances. But some physics can't be overcome.

The lady driving was on her cell, and never even looked my way. I saw the back of her head the entire time.

Scuba, I have been toying with a Yoshi notion for months. I do like the "look" and would not object to the modification from stock.. yet, the thing is, I don't want to over compensate back pressure for heat. Considering the R-77 or the TRC. Thoughts?

 

Braking or laying a bike down to avert a collision depends on so many factors that to say one method is better than the other is a demonstration of a need to hone riding skills.

Ghost gives a prime example of why in that particular case a laydown saved his ass when the brakes were not sufficient to absorb the impact.

A little history.. Until aboot 1960 some racebikes had no brakes and a shitload of bikes had crappy brakes too..

 

you maybe can avoid hitting as hard by sliding, but brakes should be first.
My abs 06 can really stop extremely fast just hitting the from level=perfect every time stop. Abs may give at least a full sec of extra braking over non abs on any surface close to pavement. It does sound like you used both and it worked ok. You could side under a truck instead of hitting it with a custom bike rollcage-seen it done on the Fulton street in the Bronx's once. There are some extremely good stunt riders there. But they are mostly a bunch of jerks like the video of bikers bothering a stupid driver.:dizzy:

 

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you mean here but this is not quite correct. ABS does not give you more time. That is impossible. WHat ABS does is prevent you from locking up. Locking up does two things to your detriment. You loose steering ability which is the biggest thing by far. ABS also brings you as close to threshold braking as you can get. It is not quite threshhold but close enough for argument sake. Your greatest braking power is at threashold, which is the point just before lock up. Believe it or not, once you lock up, your braking power diminishes from the threshold point.



In my past life, I was easily able to reach threshold braking in a car or Suburban. It takes training and practice which I had lots of. I don't know if I still have that touch. It has been a while and most cars and trucks have ABS. I don't know about the bike either. Mine has ABS

Ghost says he had about 12 feet of reaction time at 45 - 50 mph. Estimating distances is difficult without regular use of that ability, but I get the picture. You were fooken close when miss bitch talking to her hair dresser pulled in front of you. The average person takes 1/2 to 1 1/2 seconds to actually see something, register in his brain what he saw, then decide what to do and begin the task of doing this move. I don't have the formulas readily available, but you can figure it out. How far do you travel at 45 MPH in 1 1/2 seconds? Putting the bike down is probably the best thing that happened in this case. This way, there is some crumple zone associated with the bike, rather than you hitting the car with your body.

Good to see you pulled through this one Ghost. Good luck on the restoration of your ride. I trust Miss Bitchy has insurance that is covering your damages, new suit, and new helmet?

 

Hot? sadly a little yes. But she only asked if I was ok, and then left. I sent her tag number to the Police. Im certain she got two citations for it. I have NOT gotten her insurance information.

I wish I could say I thought all that math and physics to make me sound cooler, but the reality is, I did a "oh shit! Im not gonna make it" kind of thought, and dropped the bike. Again, as I stated above, it was more of a lay down and not a slide.

Imagine this.. a bike that is on the brakes as hard as can be, and right before the stop, turns, and the rider drops the bike on its side, as he hops off, still standing. The drop did more damage than her car, which I kicked.

BTW, I ride a 1st gen 87 VFR 700F2. What are these ABS brakes being talked about!?!? (wink)

 

All the "this is what I'd do" BS and more to the repair of your bike, check with your DMV on what the law says. Traffic laws in most states are similar ie, ya gotta have insurance ect. The deal here is that in most states a collision where there is damage requires at minimum an exchange of information. In the case of damages in substantial dollar amounts, taking off like this chica did, is a serious offense. In Oregon if the damage is fifteen hundred pesos or more, bugging oot is considered a hit and run.

 

Glad your okay, whats with the light blue type? Can barely read it with my old eye's on my phone...perfect example, you should of already been on your brakes expecting her to pull out and on your horn
