Ok, so got mah first 'challenge' from a harley rider - new to him 2007 fat boy.

    "This will kick the ass of that crotch rocket of yorn" sez he;

"Pr'olly could" sez I , then he say " I'd whip your ass in the quarter, but you'd get me on the top end " and I allowed as how that was pr'olly true ...

Then sez I " Such and Such road at midnight tonight " - harley dint respond to that directly.

So later I looked at the numbers - stock fatboy makes only about 77 hp (!), but lot more torque than a 2000 vfr . But the harley weighs like 650 lbs. or something.

Would I indeed lose "in the quarter" ?

Would I destroy mah clutch trying ?

And when I win, what's in it for me ? bragging rights on beating a harley ? meh.

    Advice needed.

"Challenged" describes the rider. Unless you're a very bad rider and the Harley rider is good, and has other than a stock bike, you should beat him pretty handily. He doesn't have to worry about wheelies, but he has less power, more weight, and a transmission from a 1956 John Deere tractor.

    560# dry. 70hp.
Assuming he's not a pro, he's probably pulling a best case scenario of 5.5 to 6 seconds for 0-60. You should be well under 5.
The HD gearbox will rev limit at about 45-50 in first, and 70 in second. You'll be at 60 before you're first shift.
He's probably looking at 14-15 seconds in the QM and probably in the low 90mph range.

Short of missing a shift, you would have no issues taking him.

And by the way, those are big differences that I referred to. A one second difference in the world of the QM is huge. People think its easy stuff... :nono:

But as you alluded to, what's the satisfaction other than putting an ignorant prick in his place?

I was thinking similar thoughts. My brother has a souped up Dyna Super Glide that can beat me off the line, but he's a fairly skilled rider, and I shoot past him on a dead sprint. From a rolling start there's no contest.

I get challenged all the time by cruisers and sportbikes. I had a guy on a gsxr 600 challenge me once when i didnt have my hardbags on it. When i showed up i had the hardbags attached and got laughed at. Afterwards nobody was laughing but me.

I had an older guy on an old Sportster 1200 (I think, they all look the same to me) say how he believes his Harley was faster and could out-handle my R1, I just looked at him and asked him if he was for real. I told him my R1 has a 0-60 time below 3 seconds and that I could out-do his top speed in 3rd gear and he said that was impossible. My VFR 12 could probably destroy just about any Harley ever made (unless it's bottle fed or something?) on a road, and I guarantee my R1 would.

It's the same thing with idiots in cars... They pull up at the lights, in their riced out civic or whatever and motion that they want to race... Like, my bike puts out more power than your car and weighs about 1/8th as much, best of luck.

I have seen unmarked police cars try to entrap bikes and riced up cars drivers by pulling up beside them and trying to entice them to race

Here in QLD the police have the power to confiscate your bike for 3-6 months for street racing and 40 km/h over the limit is also an instant loss of license

So I don't even bother as the traffic is so heavy most of the time I just wait until the next set of lights and then wave at them as I make my way to the front of the Queue ( filtering is now legal here if stationary or traveling less than 30km/h)

And they have recently started fining people for as little as 5km/h over the posted limit

I just save my Gas and tires for track days and early morning blasts in the country

Dam I must be getting really old !!!!
