Here it comes. Assembly Bill AB51 is being voted on in the CA legislature, while we were all sleeping. :blue:
The latest iteration that has been amended as of May 22, reads thus:

SECTION 1. Section 21658.1 is added to the
    Vehicle Code , to read:
21658.1. (a) A motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has
two wheels in contact with the ground may be driven between rows of
stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including both divided
and undivided streets, roads, or highways, if both of the following
    conditions are present:
    (1) The motorcycle is not driven at a speed of more than 50 miles
    per hour.
    (2) The motorcycle is not driven more than 15 miles per hour
faster than the speed of traffic moving in the same direction.

That doesn't sound bad, keep in mind that you can't do it at all here though.

I think they are just putting into law what is largly practices by law enforcement out there in Ca now. None of that they are proposing seems the slightest bit unreasonable to me. I think they should leave well enough alone though.

as much as I dislike laws and rules regulating all aspects of life, I think that is not a bad idea. considering lane splitting was, if I'm not mistaken, allowed to let old air cooled bikes keep moving so they didn't overheat,, its a luxury these days. Having said that, around here, "lane splitting" has taken on a new meaning. Boy racers aggressively sharing lanes with cars at 70+ miles and hour when there's no major slowing in traffic. I'm assume that's what the bill is after more than just adding more rules for the sake of rules.

Being voted on does not make it law.

Bills in any legislative body in a democracy change like most of us change our sox and skivvies. I speak only to non harley
    dood types of course..

Best to read the actual bill in it's current form in the supplied link, check oot the entire process from introduction of legislation to it becoming law. (time consuming big time) and next, get a clear picture of what a "rider" involves.

Some whacked out senator with a cousin who owns a Harley Dealership could add a rider making harleydoods an endangered species or National Treasures...

There's no law against it in the UK, unless you ride like a dick, in which case you can be prosecuted for careless/dangerous driving. Seems like a sensible set of rules to me, but then again, I'm old and sensible!

I ride my bike whenever I can, and only split lanes at red lights or stop and go traffic. When working, I drive a Courtesy Van 6 hrs a day for a local Honda car dealer, and I admit that I am surprised when a bike zips by in normal traffic! We have "Share The Road" signs, but people are pre-occupied with trying to get there first and don't look for bikes very often. Good reason for a louder than stock muffler! For those who ride in areas where it is not allowed, the law in not unreasonable.

I wish they would just allow it here in Pitt for traffic going less than 15mph, It would cut my commute by 30min. I wouldn't want people to do it at speeds greater than 50mph, the middle of the lanes here are a treacherous place. Most of the time in the winter water will get between the pavement and create potholes that the municipalities don't necessarily cover up cause they are not in the cars tire tracks.

I saw a photo recently where someone was making a statement to the city about the potholes on their street. There were three potholes on the view that had more flowers planted in them than a hanging basket. That was funny.

The bill as such, failed codification. A tenner says it will come up again. The good part is that if it passes and is made law, other states will follow. This is not to say that they will not have their own versions since who would want to copy a bunch of faggy Californios.

I am reluctant to believe that other states will follow suit without some serious persuasion. Cali is the exception because it is ingrained in our culture, and to take it away would be very difficult and encounter loads of resistance. Texas was the closest to legalizing it, yet they still failed. I believe over disagreement over the liability of the state in providing such a law.
