    I'm riding out on my ol cb400 later to look at a 99 vfr800 with 8k miles that looks to be spotless with a jardine exhaust for 3500. BB is 2600 / Nada 2400 for what a dealership would suposably charge in excellent condition. What is the reasonable amout these bikes usually go for? I'm torn between a 98-01 vfr or a hornet 919 to do some long distance rides on.

    That's what I paid for mine, with 16 K miles ... worth it, but you should haggle anyways, couldn't hurt.

    Check the date code on tire sidewall - might be a haaggling point if old tires.

    Even with the low miles price seems a little steep to me unless it has more mods.
    For long distance rides, I think the VFR is better than the hornet. Just my opinion.

    I don't think the price is that bad. If you like it, but it. Its your money.

    Check manufacture date on tires as suggested.
    Bring a voltmeter. Check battery while off (12.6 to 13.2v), at idle (should be steady in the 13's) and at 5000rpm (should be somewhere in the 14s).
    When were all fluids last done (brake, clutch, oil and coolant). While these are maintenance items and don't necessarily affect the price of the bike, if you need to drop coin to do it, its worth negotiating with the dealer.
    Does it have the owners manual? Seat cowl? Grab handles?

    I paid $2500 for my 2000 with 22,900miles on it, talked him down from $3000 due to tires and fluids. Also had to remove a bunch of hippie stickers the Boulder Co granola head put on there. It has a Two Brothers exhaust and a Givi rack with top mount as well. I would see if you could talk him down to $3k. Have any pics of it?

    I got my 01 with 16k miles for $3k. It needed a little bit of TLC but motor wise it was sound. Most likely the rider is either attached to this bike or is starting high to give room for negotiation. Based on the number of miles and description, most likely the owner babied it and as an emotional attachment to it.

    It is a good looking bike, just make sure you go over it with a fine tooth comb when you see it up close. Look for any signs of it being dropped or mistreated. Ask about service history and the like. Just remember, the yellow ones are the fastest...:senor:

    I found my 2000 for $2800 with 2776 mi on it. Came with heli bars, micron exhaust can, and new tires. I did have to replace the forks due to rust. I hope you decide to buy it! I'm sure you'll love it.

    Seen it in person and had to have it. I talked him down to 3k for it and it's in show room condition. Could not find a spec of rust or a flaw in the paint. Not a nick anywhere. It actually has 7800mi. Came with Corbin seat and stock exhaust apart from the rt 1 and cowl and tools etc and a gallon of rotella t6 oil and wix filter. Rode it home with an ear to ear grin. As I've been looking for my first vfr for ages. image.jpg

    I'm interested in learning the maintenance such as the one coming up at 8k. And also preventative measures to keep the bike is it's pristine condition such as waxing and sorts. Also the front breaks seem to bite hard with little pressure to lever. I'm coming from a 78 cb400 with drum brakes. So it might just be me.

    I am not too sure of the maintence schedule, but I am sure someone will chime in with that. Here is a link to a forum with links so you can download a service/owners manual for the bike: http://vfrworld.com/forums/showthread.php/9081-2000-VFR800-owner-s-manual . It is in the second post.

    Stopping power for this bike is a lot more powerful due to its dual disc brakes in the front and single disc break in the rear. I came from a cruiser with a single disc front and drum back and it stopped like a tank. It took a little getting used to with the increase in breaking power, but now it makes me feel more confident. You may want to have a look at your hydraulic fluids as well and if they are not clear and a brownish colour, you should flush them and replace with new fluid. You might also want to think about all new fluids since you might not know how fresh the ones that are currently in there are.

    Another important thing to look at the the R/R, also known as the Regular/Rectifier. They have been a notorious pain on this bike and is one of the biggest issues as it can cause a whole bunch of electrical issues such as melted wires and ruined stators. If it has not been replaced, you might want to consider doing that sooner, rather than later, to save yourself the ire of being stranded.     It do believe it has a r/r from a 6th gen? The p/o told me he tea about replacing the r&r with a newer models from this forum. And I'm planning on an oil change and plugs ASAP. The fluid in the brake reservoir is clear

    First up pull out your trusty little soldering iron and get rid of the stator/rec/reg connector before it fries everything, and if you don't know how to solder and heatshrink, no better time than now to learn
