After getting caught twice with a flat battery I fitted a relay and that solved that problem. I have a couple of pairs and one controller failed but was replaced without any issues and that was several years ago

    Hello all,

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but it does fit the bill. I just bought a VFR, the last owner put heated grips on (which get barely warm), he installed an ugly switch by drilling into a piece of fairing over the air vents. A) Does anyone have a switch for their grips or was that a rookie thing to do and B) if you have a switch where did you put it so its doesn't look so dang stupid. I wouldn't mind hearing a few alternatives to a switch and maybe how I can make flames come out of the grips on cold days?

All depends on the grips fitted, sounds like you have a cheap set fitted, any name on them?

Honestly, I would just replace them and upgrade to a nicer set that has more setting levels rather than just off-low-high. The set that I have mounted to my handlebars and looks pretty darn decent.

NormK, I don't see a branding on them. I would have to take a closer look once I get her out of slumber mode. I think its the large annoying switch in the middle of no where that bothers me.

I would love to get a new set but I have spent way to much this season on it already. New windshield, alarm, lock, cover, saddlebags...I am in deep at this point. Skateslabel what kind of control mechanism does your grips have?

    The swich/controller is about 40mm square 15mm thick, on/off button and a +button and a - button.

It is the Oxford push button control V.8, which is suppose to be the updated auto shut off for the grips. Forgot to take a picture of mine on the bike it self, but here is a picture from the internet. It has a nifty bracket included to mount it to where the clutch attaches.

Skates, how do you turn them on doesn't look like there is an on/off button? I see they now have 5 settings

With those you just push the "+" button to turn them on to the lowest setting and then push it to get to each higher setting and then hit the "-" button to go down through the levels until the light goes off. It is really easy to adjust on the fly as well, hand stays on the bar.

They are automatically 'Off', and you turn them 'up' by pressing the + (i.e 0%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 75%, 100%) and back off with the -

Work pretty well too, I shall go downstairs to the garage and take a picture.

Same place I put them on my 2000. I did have to bend my bracket a bit to keep them from hitting the reservoir.

Hey guys, I'll be picking up an '02 this weekend.

What version of the Oxfords are you running? I see the have ones for Touring, Sport, Adventure, etc ... most of my commuting will be highway, and I live up in "The Great White North, EH!". My commute is 45mins one way.

I have the Oxford Touring one with the V.8 controller it. I originally got the sport grips, but they were super tacky, so I settled for the Touring and it is the perfect balance for me. The only different between the Sport and the Touring is the grip is more aggressive on the sport and the Touring is more of a balance and "comfort". The Adventure ones will be too long; the Sport and Touring have the option of trimming down the the grips slightly as well.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for ... being from Colorado, I'm sure you can appreciate the weather we get up here on the Prairies in Canada. :)

I was leaning towards the "Touring" version but wanted to hear some feedback first.

Any suggestions for a heated vest or other accessories for cold weather riding in the spring and late fall?

That I cannot help you with. For the most part I end up wearing a goose down vest or down sweater (800 fill so there is less bulk) with a balaclava and that keeps me warm in to the upper 20s. I am sure some others will chime in though or have a look around the forum.

Throw some pics up when you get em on your bike!

    I'll do that for sure!

Renting a UHaul box van to transport the bike from the previous owner to the dealer for a safety this weekend, but it's looks incredibly clean and well maintained.

So one thing to think about is getting rid of the stator/recreg connector if you are going to start pulling more power through it. Just something to be aware of

bikehikefly ... thanks ... out of curiousity, are you using any sort of a throttle locker for distance travel? I know not all are compatible with heated grips.

norm ... great point ... and something I'm very familiar with (diploma in electronics and heavy in to pro grade 3D radio controlled helicopters). :)
