And also cause the rubber band that holds the tool kit down to slip and become useless!

    Good work!

Hey, just for your records, it is my 4th bike with Amsoil after breakin without any problems:

    1997 GSXR-1100, 57,000 miles

    2000 Road Star, 60,000 miles

    2003 Nomad, 72,000 miles

RVFR - Your input is certainly valid. I'm sure the original poster of this thread wants to hear BOTH sides of this argument. To elaborate on the smoking / burning oil issue, I believe that you are referring to the belief that if the rings are not properly seated during break-in, then the synthetic oil can cause the cylinder walls to glaze causing the problem that you have described. Is this what you meant?

I was initially concerned about this and did some research on it, as everyone should do if they are in doubt about running synthetic or not. For myself, what I decided was that break-in is 300 miles (as stated in the owner's manual) and by that time, the rings most certainly should be seated. I used to race MX for many years and when doing a new top-end on a 2-stroke, rings were literally seated in minutes.

The other item that weighed on my decision was that Honda offers an HP4 semi-synthetic oil that they say can be used for break-in. Therefore, rather than going with a full-synthetic, I decided to go with a semi-synthetic.

The thing that bothers me the most about this topic is the hands-off approach taken by the manufacturers. I have not seen one of them say that running synthetic will or will not harm your engine. Until then, people do need to hear the perceived pros and cons, do their own research, then decide for themselves. Until the manufacturers take a definitive stand and print it in your owner's manual, then there is no right or wrong answer here.

OK Guys. I e-mailed AMSOIL to get their thoughts on the synthetic conversion (see below). Seem to make sense to me.

    Ben,

Thank you for contacting AMSOIL with your concerns.

In response to your inquiry, you can actually use AMSOIL right away. We do recommend however to operate the engine up to its first normal drain interval with the factory motor oil. There are a couple primary reasons for this recommendation.

    1. New engines, rebuilt engines, or engine components generate high wear metals to begin with and generally contain debris from machining and assembly. It is more beneficial to allow these wear metals to collect in the factory motor oil than to circulate throughout the crankcase for extended periods in synthetic motor oil. By operating the vehicle to its first drain interval with the factory oil, these wear metals and manufacturing debris collect in the oil and are then flushed out of the crankcase when drained. This allows for a much cleaner operating environment for the synthetic lubricant.
    2. Within the first miles of operation, if there are any defects in the assembly or workmanship of the engine components, then they may be corrected before installing the synthetic motor oil.

Thank you again for the opportunity to respond to your concerns. As always, please feel free to contact us again if we can be of further assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Ed Kellerman

    AMSOIL Technical Advisor

What RW said .... I did ask my Honda service manager and he recommended I could change at 4000. I changed to golden spectro mix at 5000. I began by changing my oil at 200, 600, 1000, and 3000. But then I figure stuff has to break in, oil is cheap, and it's kind of fun to change the oil (and filter of course). We could start a thread on the best oil filter .... :)

This is the logic that I used for making my decision to use it after the first oil change. I definitely feel better now about that decision after seeing it in writing. I wish more bike and oil manufacturers would make a clear statement on the matter. Thanks for taking the initiative to get a credible opinion.
