Hello all! On Saturday June 16th I participated in my first Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000. For those of you who have not done an iron butt challenge it is both painful and alot of fun! The ride was from Dover, Delaware to the Flying J truck stop in Quebec, just outside of Montreal, and then come back! The 97 performed great, but I know need a new back brake? And my chain is dirtier than hell. The bad news is my ass is going to sue my ass for damages to my ass! If anyone else has done a Iron Butt challenge, let me know! O-ya, I did it with my friend Jeff and he rode his 06 Busa with his fiancee Angel on the back! BZ
Jeff and I became pretty envious of the 3 people on ST1300's! They had more comfort and a longer gas range. What did you ride in 99? BZ
Thanks Varollon! And it was hard. Had we not finished when we did, I was reaching my personal limits. It would have sucked to drop out. But safety first. Although the limits of "safety" were pretty much pushed! BZ
That sounds like my 3000 miler vacation trip - my rear was sore for a good 2 weeks afterward before things started to feel normal. MD
1984 Honda V65 Sabre. Even unfaired, that is a very comfortable bike, lots of room to stretch out, and the sit-up-and-beg riding position is easy on the body. The worst thing was the 17-year cicadas in western PA, it was like getting hit with rocks. Since then I have done a couple of thousand mile days on other bikes. IMHO it's easier on large, heavy motorcycles with more standard ergos. Anyone who can do it on their VFR is tough!
Congrats, on the successful completion, how did your counterpart & his pillion fair on the busa(I can't image riding as a pillion on a sport bike for that kind of mileage). My personal best to date is 600 mile day rides, I think I could go longer it just seems to always end up around the 600 mile mark when I pull back in the garage. So are you going to work your way up to doing the big show "Iron Butt Rally" 10K/10 days. I talked to a guy a couple of years ago that completed the run on a Piaggio scooter, if it can be done on a scooter it can be done on a VFR:biggrin:. I beleive the gentleman finished in the top 100, sixty something if memory serves.
OOOuch! on the cicadas LOL! Man that would have sucked. A guy was on a Valkerie and we could tell he was comfortable. Thanks Elizilla!
Jeff did very well on his busa, but Angel was in and out of sore like me. Torwards the end Jeff was all riled up, and I looked at Angel and said: "I don't think we share your enthusiasm Jeff" We all laughed, but Jeff installed a throttlemeister and he said that helped quite a bit. We lucked out on the cop situation too. When we were in upstate NY the wind died down and we started doing 90mph. It was perfect...no wind...very little traffic...and the weather was gourgeous. It was 6 in the evening. It was the most beautiful part of the ride. We rode like that till Syracuse. That saved us some time too. The key to pulling the ride off was frequent breaks and small meals. I know that sounds odd, but the iron butt web sites made those recommendations and we followed them! And thats a big "hell no" on the big iron butt ride LOL! BZ
Riders creed: Never miss an oportunity to gas up, eat or piss! Unless you just stopped 50 miles ago of course!
