Help!!! 1984 500 interceptor not starting after carb clean

So i recently cleaned out my carbs. While i cleaned the carbs i also decided to give it an oil change, and change the spark plugs. I put the bike back together, and it would not start. I decided to put some gas in the carbs to help give it some help. STILL NOTHING!!! So then i tried some starter fluid. The bike still did not fire up. I am thinking that it may be one of two things. Since the starter fluid did not work my first thought is the spark. I checked the plugs but they seem fine. My next thought is that i put too much gas into the carbs, but when i checked the spark plugs they did not seem to be wet. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE. Thanks

 

you may have knocked a wire off the coils when r/r the carbs, check all wiring

 

I checked checked wires. I forgot to mention along with oil change and spark plugs i also had to replace one of the spark plug coils.

 

Can you be more specific with the description of the "still nothing",what does that mean???, nothing, like no power, no crank, no start but there is crank... As each situation has a different diagnosis work thru. Let us know, I'm sure someone here can help diagnose, but more information is required.:cheersaf: Hope this helps.

so then you have confirmed that you have spark???????????

 

if not, pull a plug wire and put one of your old plugs in the boot. hould the the plug threads against frame and hit the starter button, let us know if you see a spark

 

The engine cranks, but will not start

That is a very important clue to this mystery--Is there anything else that you forgot to mention? What was the reason that led you to decide to replace this one coil? Was the replacement coil known to be good, or did you buy a broken one off of ebay? Are the spark igniter boxes known to be good, etc.?

Do the spark test on all four plug wires to help answer/rule out possibilities...

 

I broke one of the coils trying to pull it off a spark plug. I got the coil at a reliable motorcycle salvage place locally. I will be at the shop at 330 to do the test today, and will post results, thanks

 

Even if you do find spark, the wires could be connected incorrectly.

 

So yesterday my friend and i went to the shop, and checked all the plugs and they all had spark. We tried for about 15 minutes to start it. The bike sounded so close to starting, but then let out a loud backfire. Could it be a timing issue?

 

What you have not told us, was the bike running BEFORE you pulled the carbs

This changes the game altogether, could be anyone of a dozen things, it is not simply a runner that he pulled the carbs off and now can't get it started which was what was originally implied. Timing won't be a problem unless somebody has dicked with it. The backfire could indicate coil wires crossed but who knows, it is a case of you have to go right back to the start and check everything, start with compression check and work forward, check timing, all this sort of stuff you can't do running down to some shop for 15 mins at a time, this is serious work and why mechanics spend years learning their trade

 

The bike was running (poorly) before i removed the carbs. If i had more than 15 minutes i would have spent more time on it .My truck is getting a lift and tuned, so i do not have any wheels right now, so i am relying on friends for rides.

 

The next couple days i have meps, so i hope on Saturday i am able to do as NormK suggested and start from the beginning and check everything. I will post an update after i do so, thanks

 

Double, triple, quadruple check the plug leads are on the right way round. If you have a spark on all cylinders and even starter fluid gives you no bang then the plugs have got to be off!
