I have a 2k VFR and am really new to the brotherhood. I have heard of several mentions of the sound of a gear driven cam engine. Can anyone tell me what '' this special sound " is supposed to sound like ? Can you hear it at idle, at cruise, under load, at high RPM's. Please enlighten me oh 5th generation brothers. eddie

Oh yes .. sounds like a gear drive or like a very fine gear whine. LOL I mean you need to hear it to know what I'm talking about. It's music to my ears, yep changes tone with rpms, theres no mistaking it for anything else. well maybe a Big block Chev with a blower ;) yours or the 5th gen is very distinguishable as it's on the out board side of the engine. which for some, makes it a bit much, not I thou..

To me it sounds like a small block V8 with a supercharger. 5th gens are sooo sweet sounding!

If you're familiar with Pete Jackson Gear Drives for small block Chevy's, that pretty much EXACTLY what the 5th Gen motor sounds like. Put any decent pipe on it & you will have your own moto symphany every time you thumb the starter. My bike sounds pretty damn good with the Scorpion pipe on it. 5th Gen's with Micron, D&D or Staintune on them will make the hair on your neck stand up the first time you hear them.

Since the Wife's Hawk GT needs a new pipe, I think I will put the Scorpion on it & finally spend the cash on a Staintune like I should have done back in 2000 when I bought the bike.

    KC-10 FE out...

You may be able to hear the Gear driven cams coming towards you in this Vid taken last year at Jambaroo bends of a line of Gen 4,5 & 6 VFR's + 1 Blackbird going past .

Note Gen6's don't have Gear Driven Cam whine but still have that great V4 exhaust sound. :first:

The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Gen bikes had the gear driven cams. My 2nd Gen is as distinguishable as my old 5th Gen. It is a unique sound.
