I still remember when SNELL was exposed years ago by none other than Motorcyclist Magazine....although, in true political dirtbag fashion, SNELL never owned up to it. I created a thread on it, lemme see if I can find it.

    Here it is....

What that helmet man article doesn't say is that when there has been random testing of store bought product, most Snell (and DOT) helmets failed. ECE doesn't ask the manufacturer to hand pick and test once. They random sample from each production batch. So you can be more confident that the helmet you buy is actually built to the claimed standard.

THis is why I like to balance lab standards, certifications and statistics with anecdotal evidence. I have known three people who have had their heads go through windshields or have had moving collisions while wearing an Arai and walked away from it with no head injury. Stuff like that counts for me.

What they are finding in all sorts of helmets including football helmets is that its how well you can decelerate the g force over a longer period of time. Its wonderful that a Snell test will show that nothing pierced the shell of the helmet but it decelerated the g force so fast that the brain literally bounced off you skull and your screwed. No hole in the helmet but jellied brain. There are new football helmets that have moving panels in them to help with this.
