I would be having a serious problem if I got less than 35 MPG...usually 40-45 mpg on the highway, 38 combined, 35 city. Gen5.

The 02+ bikes are just going to be lousy on fuel compared to the earlier ones. There's too many data points for it to be a fluke anymore.

I have a 2001 and just returned from a 1,300 mile weekend and averaged 55 mpg.

It seems that this is only the case with the PCIII installed. Mine is stock and I am getting any where from 42-44 MPG.

hfam - like all motors, it'll take some time to "loosen up" and give you the best mileage. Don't expect to see the 200 mile tanks some people are getting for a couple of thousand (several thousand?) miles.

My "best ever" tanks are up in the 225 range before the blink, but this was loaded down with bags, no cold starts, and keeping the speed under 70 mph. Normal in the city, maybe 145-165 before the last bar starts blinking.

Cold starts seem to really kill the mileage the bike will give you. You'll get the best mileage during an all day cruise at somewhat legal 2-lane highway speeds.

Someone asks about the first bar dropping quickly. If I follow the book's instructions for filling the tank, I loose the first bar within about 15 miles. If I center-stand the bike (like when I lobing the chain at a not so busy gas station), I can overfill the tank. I've seen about 40-50 miles when I do this before I loose the first bar.

Disagree. Take a look back through numerous posts on this board and on VFRD and you'll see that your case is the exception with the 02+.

It is possible however, that since yours is a current year model that the PGMFI got a re-map.

The best I have got with my current Gen 5 Mk1 was 192miles as Flash started, was able to get in 4.7 Gallons in or 40.9 Miles per gallon.

Best I got on my previous '03 Gen 6 was 225 at flash and was able to get in about 4.8 Gallons or 46 Miles per gallon...

My riding both times would be best described as brisk but smooth and with the Gen 6 mostly below Vtec range, the VTec in most types of riding except maybe at 9/10's was better fuel economy wise.

The Gen 5 range while not as good as the VTec was still has me laughing at the sports bike riders I tour with when they suddenly need to slow down to >40mph with 30 miles to the next country town with GAS.

not too long ago, maybe nov/dec, a brit magazine that a bmw friend reads, ran an article on, "the best engines you've never heard of." i can't find the magazine or i'd link to it.

    anyway,

there were four. the VFR, triumph triple, a two cylinder yamaha, and the bmw opposed twin.

longs story short, the article posted the VFR around 48.

Ok seems that I have made a huge boo boo on my MPG calculation. I divided the miles until blinking by 5.8 (VFR tank size) when I should have divided miles by actual fuel put in the tank.

Yesterday I made 151 miles on 1 tank. well 151/5.8=26 MPG. So im not sure how many MPG I really got. I need to start over and actually record the amount of fuel and distance. 1 Note: for the last test I always stayed below VTEC range.

Is your bike stock? If I stay out of VTEC, I am pulling around 43 MPG. 26 seems way low.

start with a full tank. run a specific distance doesn't matter how far, and then refill. (miles ran / gals at refuel)

    60mi / 1.5 gal = 40 mpg

i'm looking at this the right way aren't I?

    i'm not in kansas anymore?
how did i end up in this thread?

I'm at about 900 miles ... Keep checking it. Hopefully it was just your math.

How to calculate miles per gallon

The units will save you when you are doing the math...

    mpg = miles per gallon = Miles/gallon
    -------------------------------------------------------------
next time you fuel try this:
    1. reset your trip odometer to 0.0
    2. level the bike and fill'er up. (Center stand helps)
    3. Ride until you have a bar or so left on the fuel guage
    4. level the bike and fill'er up (same way as before)

    Now the math part:
    a) take the miles from the odometer you set to 0.0
    b) and the gallons of fuel the pump says you just put in the tank since the last fill up.

now divide the miles by the gallons.

    Example:
the odometer reads 187.2 miles since the prior fill up and the tank took 4.213 gallons to get it to the same level you filled up to last tank. you'd have

    187.2 miles/4.213 gallons=44.43 miles/gallon or ~44mpg

or another way to write it that might make look more familiar:

    187.2 miles
    ------------------- = 44.43 mpg
    4.213 gallons

If the math is too hard, just stop to refuel only when you've burned *exactly* one gallon of fuel and see how many miles you've gone.

yeah. I know that. I just wasnt paying attention. I just assumed that since the tank holds 5.8 (specs) that I can use that. Im not assuming again :)

If anyone is actually getting 48 or more mpg on a vfr I'd like to know how.. Are they actually running the engine or ghost riding the thing! At VERY best I'm at 38mpg, when I abide by the speed limit of 65mph. Granted, I live at 6,000 ft elevation... I guess at 55mph in 6th gear at about 68 degrees at sea level someone 'could' do much better but and increas of 12mpg..or an additional 70 + miles per tank of gas! Maybe I have a lemmon with regards to fuel consumption? There is NO way I'm going to get over 40mpg in real world riding....I wish I could though!

I Just Filled Up This Morning With 3 Gallons And Had 130 Miles On The Trip. If I Did My Math Right That Should Be About 43 Mpg. Im Comuting About 40 Miles Round Trip And Its Mostly Congested Highway Driving. Im Usually Going About 40-60 Mph And I Usually Keep It Under 7500 Rpm.
