What you could have done was slow down on the straights. That would have given him a chance to get ahead, and you could have still had fun in the corners.

I do not see the reason for referring to him as a douchebag, or an idiot, simply because you were going a little faster pace than him and he tried to increase his pace. Like you said, he was not going 10 MPH in a Harley parade. It makes me think of riders who get so mad that a car will not pull over to let them smoke by as you are racing up and down the road on which they live. Some people think that they are of greater importance than anybody else on the road, and all other drivers/riders should pull off the road as they near. It doesn't work that way, we have to share the road with many others, so a little consideration goes a long way. As was suggested, if you had slowed on the straights (or pulled off for a second) you could have had more room on the corners. It sounds like you need to learn to chill out a little bit, because if little things such as this get you all worked up brotha, well, you have bigger issues at hand.

    Ride safe..

Slow/slower guys move over for Faster guys; that is the motorcycle etiquette that I know and practice. When I have a faster rider come upon me, I let him pass. The fact that the other guy sped up and blocked our fellow VFR rider sounds "doushey" to me. No one owns the road, and I have to slow down because of that guy blocking a public road... Really?? That is nonsense. Safety is what is most important but I agree that the slow guy was at the least a Moron regardless of what he was riding.

Was he a fast guy riding slow?,,,was he a slow guy riding fast? Does his wife have fake titties like Duccmanns avatar? All good and important questions to ponder but we will never know the answer.

I would suggest as many already have that etiquette is dictated by the arena and conditions you are operating in. Given your description, if I was the guy on the adventure bike, I would have waved you by but I wouldn't even have needed to because I would have shifted to the right lane which would allow you to slide by effortlessly. If on the other hand, I was on my VFR and felt frisky, I would have done the same and then run your ass down or given it a good shot as long as it appeared that you were in control. If you looked like you were struggling I wouldn't push you. Either way I would prefer to have you out in front because it puts me in a good position to make informed decisions which is a must on the road. That's the way I would play it.

On the track you would have to earn the position....:chaingun:

Where am I getting worked up? There really wasnt any anger during the events, more sheer bewilderment. I didnt give him the bird or any other pissed off gestures. Just passed when I could. And BTW his first swing over into the other lane was a legal passing zone where I was preparing to pass. But I guess that's cool right?

Except you, none of us were there, that I know of (unless one of us was that guy..lol), so it's difficult to 2nd guess a reaction. However, as this thread is about etiquette, appears most of us agree with you - the guy should've let you pass...

The behavior the rider exhibited is more common amongst cagers, and that is trying to pick up the pace just to stay in front and when there are sections that are straight they really get on the gas, basically saying "You're not getting in front of me".
In the canyons, cars cannot take the corner, or do not want to take the corners at the same pace as us motorcyclist. This usually means they hold us up, and potentially many more vehicles (cars/trucks included) and will hold their pace until the straight sections where they feel more comfortable with higher speeds. What gets me is that they will pass several turnouts and never use one. It's not like the turnouts are not marked in addition you will see several signs "Slower Traffic Use Turnouts" along the road!

This is also very common even on freeways/highways. Good example is my travels this weekend, I was in the #2 lane and the car in front of me was going much slower than the flow of traffic, even cars in the #3 lane were passing him, as I approached cars in the #1 and #3 lanes were preventing me from getting around this driver safely so I maintained a safe distance and when I moved over into the #1 lane to get around the car, douche bag started to speed up! Really, for the 3-5 minutes I was behind them and the flow of cars wizzing by wasn't clue enough that they were going too slow for that lane, let alone for the flow of traffic?

Yes, the rider may have been saying "OK sportbike, let's play!", but when the rider goes over the line (the ones on the road) that is basically saying "No way are going to get in front of me", at least that's the way I see it.

I recall (among the cobwebs of my memory) a rule in CA that requires drivers to pull over if they are slower than traffic and there are 5 or more vehicles behind them. I know there was that law...but I've never seen it practiced nor enforced....

I have to admit....the only reason I am responding is that I want to see duccmann use his "thanks" button five thousand more times to any responses to my post original post, or anything condoning his beliefs. lol

I know the guy in the post sounds like a real jerk, especially swinging wide and blocking the pass but there is another type of rider I think. This is the rider you can push just by getting close. My buddies and I were riding the Talamena Parkway in what we thought was a pretty safe and sane speed. We came up on a woman riding a Spider. Instead of moving over and letting us pass she tried to lead. I saw that Spider pull a front wheel up on three different occasions. As we approached a scenic turnout she braked really hard and made for the exit. I saw her shake her head as she stopped. I think she was riding way over her head just to keep our pace. I don't know why she would do that.
