Ok I know this has been covered but on my 2007 VFR 800 I want to change out to a different size Sprocket for more take off and more acceleration .
So I have had guys tell me -1 in the front is the same as +3 in the rear . Is that true ? I'm not looking to go crazy but something I can really feel .
Also at what point do I need to replace the chain do to Sprocket change ? I'm looking to make a order tonight .

Going to a 15 in front increases the angular velocity of your chain which can increase chain and countershaft sprocket wear.

I'm running a '99 with a stock countershaft sprocket (17) and a 45 rear sprocket. An excellent combination IMO. I didn't have to change the chain when I went to the 45 tooth sprocket.

A 16 front and 45 rear would seem a little under geared for me. I guess it would depend on where you spend most of your riding time, twisty 2 lanes or fast 4 lanes.

my 520 chain kit did with a 45 rear sprocket came out real nice, just enough extra low gear, any more and you would turn it into a tractor. You don't want to ruin hwy speed. I think this is the right gearing as the vfr is heavy-loaded up and the gearing is too high for sure.

You can get a complete kit from sprocketcenter.com. I went back and forth with my 07 between a -1f and +2r. They were pretty similar. Either one definitely helps wake it up, with only a little loss of top end. I also had a speedo-healer.

I could feel the difference on mine. It made pulling out from a stop just so much easier, and it seems to feel a bit zippier. I wouldn't go back to stock.

Ok I ordered a 45T today from sprocketcenter.com hope to have it by this weekend :)
Now 5th gen has a 17/43 stock . 6th gen has a 16/43 stock . so I will be 16/45 I should feel it . I looked it up at 75 mph I'll be turning 500rpms more then stock in 6th gear . And yes we have speed limits of 70mph .

Slightly unrelated, but...how hard to change the front sprocket? Coming from a sports bike, it was major effort....

It's not too hard. Once you remove the clutch slave cylinder, it's right there. The hardest part is removing/re-torquing the sprocket bolt if you're by yourself.

Torquing the bolt isn't an issue, just put a wooden board between the spokes of the rear wheel, put the bike in gear, and tighten the bolt. Not that bad.

Just to add some additional info WRT sprocket changes, I've run the 17/45 combo with 520 chain for a little over a year now under various conditions & find it to be a good setup. 16/45 should be fine as well, although I agree with FJ12rydertoo that a 17 front would promote slightly less wear over time. This is an observation that is wide spread on the net, and as we all know, if it's on the web it's true  ... seriously though, I think the physics bears this out ...

Did you only change your rear sprocket? That's not a smart move if you have anything over 1000 miles on your current set. It's best to change both sprockets and chain together as a complete set. And FYI, you can run a 520 set on that bike to save weight with no problems.

    No . New 16/45 and new chain . I'm not interested in the 520 . I'm sticking with a 530 .

If I was worried about weight I would have got an aluminum sprocket

It's not that big of a deal. I put a new chain, not sprockets just chain, at 19,300 miles to replace the OEM chain. I changed the rear sprocket to a 45 tooth at 35,300 miles. I now have 39,000 miles and it's getting pretty close to time to change it.
