Good luck to you & your SO, metallyguitarded ... back in my early 40's I ran a number of 1/2 marathons, and a few full marathons here locally. I trained by running 5, 10, & 15K events prior to the main event, along with weekly running. Didn't really bother with weight training or hitting the gym & such. Just made sure to run, both intervals & distance. For the marathons, the best thing I did for myself was to get 3 or 4 20mi runs in before the main event. Knowing what 20mi felt like before going 26+ made a big difference from one attempt to the next. Also, the distance runs gave me an idea of water needs, and what snacks would work along the way. Food bars can taste like crap after 12 or 15 miles of running, bananas were better for me  ... give yourself time off from training just prior to the event, say a few days for a 1/2 (opinions here will vary), and just rest up.

Thanks Ace! I believe my longest training run will be 11 miles. Personally, I know that once I'm able to hit 10 miles, I'll be able to push through the extra 3.1 on race day. I've planned in a decent taper the last two weeks before the race. I'll have to experiment with the bananas once my runs get longer. Would hate to have stomach issues in the middle of the run!

Good luck. I'll be resuming training soon for nothing in particular other than getting off my lazy arse. I had started biking again a few weeks ago but got sick and it really kicked my butt. I'm starting to feel pretty normal so I'll probably start with a 6-10 mi ride depending on how I feel and work my way up to doing that 3x a week for a while then try and move up to 15 mi +/- for a few weeks. Eventually I want to ride to work which is around 22 miles but with significant elevation change.

I missed my run yesterday due to a late night at the office. Didn't finish work until close to 10pm. Looks like a lot more of those late nights are in my immediate future. I got up early today and ran. It's looking more and more like I have to get used to running early if I'm going to get my training in.

    09.24.2014: 0 miles.
    09.25.2014: 3 miles. Done.

Good going Reg. It's sad how easily getting sick can throw us off our workout schedules. Hope we both stay healthy and on track!

I run every other day, and have been for many years. I have various loops and terrains (dirt/trail/pavement) in which I like to run to mix it up, running anywhere from 4 to 6 miles. I normally do not run past that, except on rare occasions as I do not believe the benefit outweighs the negatives. Keep that in mind during your training, as sometimes one's mind can become accustomed to the same route and find it boring. Plus different routes (lengths, terrain, hills, etc) can really help mix it up. I live in the Mira Mesa area, so I have multiple loops in which I run to keep things interesting. I also ride my road bike, and or mtn bike on different routes frequently as well.

Remember to give your knees a break here and there, as they need time to re-cooperate. Giving your knees a break, having a good (newer) pair of running shoes, a proper diet, and good breathing technique is key (IMO). Good luck on your endeavor.

    Cheers,
    Jason

Thanks Jason. This Saturday will be my first 4-mile run in a long time. I feel ready for it. My training schedule has me running on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. That should give my knees enough of a break and, if they start to bother me, I'll rest them even more. I'm in need of a new pair of shoes. Mine were great a few years ago but their best days are behind them.

I think the coolest thing I've started doing was using a running app. It makes it so much easier to just pick a location and start running and then turning back when the audible alert tells me I've reached half my distance. On the out and backs it's great. When I start to do some loops, I'll still have to plan a bit but it's still helpful, announcing distance, time and average speed per mile.

Seeing how we're practically neighbors, I hope to meet you someday and we can go for a ride. I know that you've ridden with Scubalong and I believe OOTV. It would be cool to get us all together.

I'm not sure who this scubalong character is that you speak of, but I will have to meet him one day to see how crazy he really is.

Where in San Diego are you? If you are nearby, and our schedules match up, I would be up for a run sometime. I usually prefer to run in the mornings (less traffic/cars & people), meaning less interference's for me, but I can run other times. I work in the Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley area as well.

I'm down by SDSU. Not exactly close but not too far either. Maybe we can get together on a weekend run but let me get my mileage up first! That, and I hope you don't mind my turtle's pace - 10 min/mile. I'm a little faster on the VFR.

Anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like Michael Jackson with your helmet off?

We can meet for the annual running of the bums in Balboa park. I can run at all speeds, so no problem about your pace. Sometimes I like to take it easy cheesy....

If you knew about wild mountain midgets, you would understand their infatuation with making their captors dress up like the king of pop.

Maybe in bad taste, but my taste has never been that good. lol

Question: What’s the difference between Michael Jackson and a grocery bag?
Answer: One is white, made out of plastic, and dangerous for kids to play with and the other you carry your groceries in.

Balboa Park is perfect. You referring to us when you write "running of the bums"? I'm good with that. Just wanted to be sure.

I have an ad just below your Michael Jackson joke. It's the Allstate Insurance guy. He's got a look on his face like, "Okay, that was kinda funny. I'll give you that one."

    I think he likes it..jpg
