Tool kit?.. what a joke

Been having so much fun riding my new VFR that I have not had time to really check things out on the bike. Last night I was attaching my heated vest connector and thought I should check out the tool kit. What the f--K? A plastic bag with a shock absorber spanner and handle? that's it? My '81 CB750F has a pretty decent tool kit and most of you know what kind of tools you get with a BMW bike. top of the line stuff. Since I am a newbie, has anyone posted what should be included in a pretty comprehensive tool kit for the VFR?

I know, I know... they never break down, so why carry the extra weight!:smile:

Even the full tool kit is a joke. Very low quality but most of us have decent stuff in the garage and to be honest I have never needed the tool kit on the road. Of course I just asked for trouble didn't I.

 

At least you got the shock spanner. All mine came with was an allen wrench and a screwdriver. At the bare minimum they should have the hub spanner and shock spanner.

 

I think that I got lucky - my Honda tool bag on my '96 looks to be complete...
several multi box wrenches, a screwdriver with two "bits", the pin spanner and the extension, a 0.7 feeler gauge, a mini-lug wrench (aww... it's so cute), and a few other things I'll never use. I can barely snap the poch shut with all that stuff in it.

I don't think there was a shock spanner in there, though...

They are mostly crap, which I would expect. The only thing in my opinion worth anything in the kit is the Pin Spanner to tighten your chain. I know you can get them at other place, but where else would you use it?

 

The only thing that spanner and handle is good for is holding up the fuel tank while you wire up a GPS unit, or check the air filter. I was ready to go to the dealer and raise h$ll and find out who stole the tool kit out of my new bike, but I got exactly the same as you did. So, I guess that's all they come with.

 

John - I was as shocked as you when I checked the kit in my 07 (already put together a decent kit). But I think the tool in there is for adjusting the chain. Fits on the rear hub.

 

I have recently been toying around with the '96 and was perplexed as to where a toolkit could fit!
Ended up going down to the local plastic box supplier and getting a small lunchbox that just fits under the pillion seat.
It contains the puncture repair kit, spanner + pliers.
I need to source a small hex key set and a few items to form a basic 1st aid kit and also gaffertape and cable ties!
All of that would have fitted into the '88VFR!

 

There isn't one in there because you can't adjust the preload on the stock shock.


My '94 toolkit has everything except the feeler gauge. I did add a shock spanner since I have a 929 rear shock on it now...

 

Actually, VFRRyder is right, all you get is the spanner wrench with handle for adjusting the chain. Nothing else! A week after getting my '07, I had to go buy a spanner wrench so I could adjust the shock. It cost me $12. It's amazing how things have changed. My '86 came with so many tools that I can barely get the bag closed up whenever I'm in it.

 

The kit that came with my 2003 Honda ACE is stuffed full of tools. Everything including screwdrivers, pliers, all needed chain adjusting tools, and more. Imagine my surprise when I checked out the kit in my new 07 RWB VFR.

 

The manual says 'See your Honda dealer for a more complete tool kit'. After paying for the bike they want more for the tools! Greed!

 

The 2002 came with a full kit. Cheap as they are, it is a full kit.

A co-worker of mine just bought an ST1300. Same thing. He got and allen key and a screw driver.

I know that there are a lot of tool kit / tool role makers out there. Here's a good idea for a new business... make up decent quality, compact, tool kits for the bikes shipping with the wimpy kits. Make them in a size and shape that will fit under the seats, etc.

 

I have just bought a 2006 which as we all know only came with the chain adjusting tool.
So what does the dealer tool kit come with, I have a lot of tools and would like to make up my own, does any one have list of the tools?

Also one of the black plastic covers that cover the Allen head bolts on the grab handles is missing, has any one got one they do not want?

LOL. I think if you put a little vaseline on the sides of that yellow thing, that should help it squeeze under the seat.

 

So maybe when you get a minute you could look inside your tool box and let me know what tools would make up a good tool kit to take on the road with me, I am heading to Alaska and would like to be able to atleast remove the wheels if I need to have a tire fitted and make minor repairs if need be, I know I will have no issues it is a honda after all but would rather be prepared.
Worst case scenario I could hook up my utlity trailor and take my Snap On roller cab which is the faster red one with me!
