    Hello everyone,
I started riding when I was 18 years old with a 1987 interceptor. I loved the bike and so did the ladies. I then got married and had kids and the bike was sold. 20 years later, I inherited my uncle's 2002 VFR800 with 9000 miles. My aunt gave me a great deal and the wife lost her fear of motorcycles or she's secretly hoping for the insurance money. Either way, I'm having a blast. My uncle lived in Long Beach, CA and I'm in the Seattle area. I flew down to LB and rode the bike back home. What a great trip. An epic 1400 mile journey. The only drawback was that I did the journey in 3 days. Next time, I take a week.

I've gone a few other trips this summer but I mostly use it to commute the past couple of months. Recently, I developed a slow leak in my front tire and didn't notice it until it was so difficult to steer. Turns out the tire desperately needed to be replaced due to being bald like me. The new tire feels great. Looking forward to another month of consistent riding before the seattle rain begins.

    Cheers.

Congratulations on your purchase. I know what you mean about bald tires and heads,

At only 9000 miles, were those original tires. If so they should have been replaced anyways. 14 year old tires would be drier than a popcorn phart and not the safest to ride on.

Welcome to the site. You should get many years of enjoyment out of that bike. Just make sure that the recalls have been taken care of.

It's had regular maintanence and had recently had an oil change before I picked it up. Clutch may need some attention and the back tire will need to be replaced in the next few months. Overall, it's running excellent.

What is going on with the clutch? They are almost infallible. I haven't done a thing to my clutch other than to replace bent levers and mine had 113K miles.

It has a bent clutch handle ($45) to replace and check the clutch fluid. Not sure how often that gets replaced. The friction point is almost all the way out, but it seems to work fine.

Yup. I have replaced a couple levers. Given the age of the bike, a bleeding of the clutch would be time well spent. Not a difficult process. A service manual is available for download on that other site. We used to have them here but for some reason, the link stopped working on the last site upgrade.

If you need, and you want the play by play on bleeding the clutch, I can send you the appropriate section from the service manual in a private message.

This may be obvious to you, but don't get any of that fluid on any painted surface. It is brake fluid and it will destroy any paint ally fast.

Thanks Randy. It would be great if you can send me the appropriate section of the manual for bleeding the clutch.

When I get back to my desk, I'll send you a link to the Honda Service Manual, it's over 200MB so I can't email it. The link is to the file I have in my Dropbox.

    Cheers

congrats on the bike. the second round of fun is always a great milestone. I think there's a significant number of us who rode all the time in our single youthful days. Then life catches up with us and we have to sell our bikes. For some reason our women/family "lets us" get back into riding. It always seems more fun than it was when we started. Or atleast a different type of fun. Anyway, ride the wheels off that thing.

BTW, if you need a OEM clutch lever, let me know. I have my 07 laying around somewhere, I went to a multiadjustable when I bought the bike. so if I can find it, it's yours. $45 you can put towards fuel/farkles.

I definitely would appreciate the clutch lever since I broke mine in half trying to straighten it.

It might need clutch and brake fluid replaced and a coolant flush unless you know that was done specifically. If it was serviced by a Honda dealer I imagine the recall refits were performed. If not, get that done.

I like Michelin Pilot Road 4s. But that's a matter of taste.

Really happy to hear that another former rider is now a current rider. Awesome!

AND red is best. Just saying . . .

The 2002 had a few recalls. Check with your local Honda dealer and make sure they are done. Also probably a good idea to install VFRness and keep and eye on (or change) the stator to RR connector. I believe the famous "blue" connector ground wire and "starter harness" were part of the recall replacements.

The tires should have a date stamp
