You get the award for finding the most useless/fruitless apparel imaginable for HD. I had to read it for an extra second for it to sink in, originally thinking that it was food, but no; a washing machine might eat it though. Crazy stupid chit really, gona steal a line from a famous comedian here, "if you nail together two things that have never been nailed before, some ass-hole will buy it." In this case, mom would be brain washed me thinks, because husband/in-seminator would be oot there with his hd underware/flip flops/do-rag, sippiing suds from his hd mug. :loco:

I find the ad sexist. It completely leaves out little harleydood girls or little dudes that really want to be HD girly girls.

Order now because the lawyers will be all over this guy. Or, somebody is pulling off a good one.

Yes back in the day HD raced flat track, boardwalk etc. Back then there was no real competition because most bikes were the same elementary design of frame and motor in the beginning. They, HD, were fast for a while though not in road racing. Guys like Chet Herbert also add to the fray of records. Not totally sure but I think he made the first racing roller cams for Harley and were used in the "Beast" Harley. He did make the first roller cams for cars.

" His racing Harley-Davidson, nicknamed "The Beast," was the fastest quarter-mile dragster in its day, having achieved a then record-shattering 129 mph, faster than any car in 1950. Herbert also developed the zoomie-type exhaust header, which blew the smoke away from a dragster's rear tires in order to achieve better traction, helping them break the 200 mph record. Herbert was one of the first to establish a successful speed shop and parts mail-order business. According to hot rod historian Greg Sharp of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, Herbert was probably the first racing parts retailer to utilize advertising in national magazines to reach consumers. His chopped 1932 Ford sedan was a rolling billboard for his business. He built it with a Hydromatic transmission so he could drive it using hand controls. It was featured in the March, 1952, issue of Hot Rod Magazine and in 2007, was voted one of the most significant 1932 Ford hot rods in history.
Herbert was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1993. "

I knew Chet in the later years, though not very well but raced/worked with his adopted brother "Billy Williams". Harley was the rage back then when V twins were basically the only bikes around. As we know things changed and Harley didn't. They just carved out a niche of nostalgia and made it a life style vs a great motorcycle like it was once considered.

His son Doug is following in his dads foot steps as far as Bonneville goes. Haven't seen Doug since the racing days (95-02) so I don't know what's up with the Bonneville thing.

Oddly mid capacity "classic" motorcycles is something Indians do reasonably well, I'm amazed at the unlikely locations these Royal Enfield's turn up, better built than their English originals and unlike a good percentage of Harley Davidsons I've caught up to in the twisties they don't have the annoying HD riders attitude of "thou shalt not pass" and usually yielding politely to a faster rider coming through.

I'll bet they get a cease and desist letter from HD and maybe even Disney. My daughter got one from HD. She makes doll clothes and sells them on an Etsy store. She uses old t-shirts, cutting down the original shirt but using the design to make a doll top. Harley told her that they did not permit the 're-purposing" of their brand on any product even though she had originally purchased the shirt. She sold it anyway.

HD still dominates AMA Pro flat track. The board tracks of the early part of the 20th century were big. Sometimes 2.5 miles around. Granted that history has a habit of becoming whatever someone says it is, Harley dominated really early flat tracking but maybe not board track. History, accurate or not, shows some 300 manufacturers of motorcycles in the USA A shit load of the culture of racing in the US was centered roughly in SoCal. At first unorganized on the streets and dry lakebeds, mechanical whizzes were building and modifying any thing that moved either car or bike wise. This includes the famous RAJO head for Ford model T blocks that were still running in sprintcars in as late as the mid 1950s. A Japanese-American guy from Long Beach (??) developed the gear.

Road racing was not all that popular unless we include cross country enduros. Tracks so far as I know, were nonexistent Road racing was done on roads. Still is in some parts like the Isle of Man and a shitload of crazy Irish dudes in Ireland.

Chet Herbert was bigtime in SoCal. He did not invent the roller cam gear. He took the idea from HD and made it work on Chryslers big blocks.

I grew up aboot a quarter mile from the gates of Lions Drag Strip. We lived on the other side of the dividing line of the City of Long Beach and the County of Los Angeles. The street is and was 223rd st. The gate entry to the strip was on 223rd and Almeda St., at the time the main drag from the LA Harbor area to downtown LA. The area was a mishmash of refineries, cat crackers and truck farms called "Dominguez" after a very old Spanish land grant. It is now Carson.. All kinds of bikes and cars and all that is akin to both within just a few miles of my folks house. Moon-Iskendarian-Bill Stroppe- Barris Kustom- Micky Thompson- Dean Van Lines. Carroll Speedway ect.. You can bet your ass that Chet Herbert did not use Tillotson carbs on his first beast.. ;) Beast III still holds records at Bonneville. circa 1953..

I am still believing that the first if not one of the first car clubs started in Dominguez in the 1940s with "ThunderBugs". Bunches of the hot rod older guys went to work for the aircraft companies in the general area like Douglas and North American. A few didn't make it back from WWII or Korea. SoCal at the time was mecca for going fast and drew guys from all parts of the US driving and riding and wrenching and inventing.

Herbert's chopped deuce get play in the media regularly.

Lions was so popular and busy that it ran on both Saturday and Sunday. The rule was run what ya brung on Saturdays and on Sundays the cars and bikes had to be Gas or Fuel class race machines.

I don't think there will ever be an accurate history written about American racing in general. It's way too diverse. I always thought it really great that my mom and dad never bitched about AA Fueler making a run at Lions on a Sunday morning and put a couple of pesos in my hand to walk over and get in and up close. Not much like the smell of nitro, hot rubber and Castrol R in the morning. I called it cool..

Good article. I know what they were like in roadracing. I can't even imagine on dirt.

Harley is a life style and this is how far it's gone for future HOGs. [IMG]

But then again the do get biker chicks!! [IMG]

Just working on getting to 40 pages worth. There are some good Harley people out there and I know a few. It's a shame they get lumped in with the others.

I hate loud slow Harleys and the elitist attitude that seems to accompany the purchase of one. That being said I really, really like the Night Rod or whatever the black VROD is called. That is a sweet bike and it seems to be mostly un-Harley. Maybe that's why Harley guys apparently hate it.

    I always enjoy a good Harley-bashing thread.

    Now on to 40 pages!

I have heard what Roberts said really has been edited a bit. That ride and that bike have been around as promo material for years. That engine probably put out more than the 125 hp stated in a band of maybe 200 rpm. Anybody that has ever cranked hard on a Gamma will know aboot this.

There is a pic of Rex Beauchamp in sideways in a full lock slide on the net. No brakes either. Classic shot.

    Crappy reproduction.. Sorry bout that..

A bonus is that the biker chix taste like chicken.

I was tasked by some folks to set up an all Harley ride starting at a dealership and ending at a music venue. My partner in all this has books out on Harleys. We got to the shop early so as not to miss anyone. There was stuff in the store that neither of us had a clue what it was for. No, we didn't ask...

" Oddly mid capacity "classic" motorcycles is something Indians do reasonably well, I'm amazed at the unlikely locations these Royal Enfield's turn up, better built than their English originals " Hi John you obviously don't know much about the reliability of Enfields built in India, I have no idea how many of these motors I have rebuilt, many with not much more than 10,000ks on them, odd one slipped through the net and got up to 30,000ks.The cafe racer you posted a pic of is still a bit of an unknown as it has only been on the market here for about 8 or 9 months. As for replacement parts, don't expect anything to fit

Complaints should be addressed to WalMart's combination sweatshop, customer service department and Royal Enfield works.

Hi Norm, you're correct my experience is only in seeing groups of them in places like the Snowys Elliots Hwy last year and the back roads between Queanbeyan and Goulburn earlier this year, mind my general comment on their good road etiquette in yielding to faster riders still stands.

Hi John, that would have been the boys heading to Bungendore, it is an annual event and on an Enfield you have to be polite to everybody because you can't outrun a postie bike :smile-new: probably not true because the first bike I ever got to pass going in the same direction on my Enfield was a postie Just trying to get this up to 40 pages but I don't think you need my help at this rate the next milestone will be 50
