I just finishd rebuilding the rear head on my 86 vf500f and now that I have it back together the transmition or clutch is making a squeling sound. it seems to do it more after the bike warms up. it does it in neutral or any other gear (makes me think clutch issue) and it onbly happens when the clutch lever is out. if I pull the clutch in slightly it will go away. it sounds like a powersteering belt on a car. If I pull the clutch lever in even an 1/8 of an inch it goes away.

Any ideas what would cause this. I have spent a fair amount of time searching the net with no luck

It runs great now with the rebuilt head though...

    Thanks for the help,
    Tim

I am running castrol ATV oil, 10-40 weight

That bearing is bathed in oil and I've never seen one fail. My 86 had the same sound and I finally tracked it to the end of the clutch rod on the slave cylinder end. The rod will spin in some cases and squeals in the slave cyl. That's why it goes away when you put the slightest pull on the clutch lever and engage the bearing. Every now and then I need to apply some grease or moly paste. It started after I put in my Barnett clutch.

that sounds like the issue, I will tear the slave cylinder off and put a bit of grease on the end and see if it goes away. that sure would be nice :)

    Thanks for the great idea.

Trying to figure out what you mean by clutch rod on slave cylinder head. Where is it on the diagram?

The slave cyl mounted on the left sprocket cover that says, "hydraulic clutch". Take that off (3 bolts), there will be the end of the clutch push rod that gets pushed by the cyl. That's the spot.

    Grease location

Here is where you put the grease. I just put a little dab on the end of the shaft and reinstalled the slave cylinder.

Be very care full when retightening the three bolts on the slave
cylinder they can strip very easily.
