And motorcycles, cars, and other vehicles have "brakes", not "breaks".
Can't we do better in our writing and discourse?

Soloii, I agree. It's offensive. I'm a bit of prude when it comes to English. It's math that kills me. I told my son there are basically three kinds of people; those who can count and those who can't.

My pet peeve is the use of "bring" and "take". You can't bring something here to there, you have to take it. The ONLY time to use bring is when it is somewhere else and you ask someone to bring it from there to where you are.

No ^^, i agree that it's worth discussion. Poor education in primary schools, hanging out with the barely-literate, miserably low standards, cell phone and tweeter lingo all contribute to to our spelling and language decline.

Ask Bad Billy and Randy -they seem to know English, but I agree spelling brakes-breaks is stupid.

Problem is there is a number of words that are spelt differently between Aussie and American, I hate it when the spell checker keeps telling me that a word is wrong and I know it isn't

I appreciate (and enjoy) hearing and reading the variations of English as practiced by those from the other former colonies of Great Britain as well as those for whom English is a second language. So, I do understand someone when they say or write "whilst turning your spanner anti-clockwise to remove the clocks" or they call someone a "git". I am just as capable of thoroughly abusing the spoken form, but I almost always avoid it when writing. Since they are devoid of non-verbal cues, written communications are easily misinterpreted or misunderstood. I am just thinking we should be expecting better rather than settling for a low standard (After all we are (mostly) VFR owners and riders). Given a moment to educate and inform, I will almost always take advantage of that moment, be it for motorcycle tech, riding tech, gear, or our methods of communication. Just my $0.02. :soapbox: Rant over. :eek:hwell: :bounce:

Four words: No Child Left Behind

Helicopter parents insisted that their (not they're or there) children could do no (not know) wrong and should NOT be reprimanded by any institution or individual - especially (not exspecially) the Public School System. They voted in the people that would ensure (not insure - that's how you protect your bike) their (again, not they're or there) children would (not wood) never have to stay back a year in school.

Txtglish now rules the lives of the younger generation and they couldn't pass a grammar test literally (used correctly) to save their own lives.
