fender elimination kit with undertail trunk

Someone ripped off my license plate right in my garage and in the process destroyed the mounting points on the trunk so now I'm looking for the same thing to replace the destroyed trunk. Has anyone seen anything like this for a fifth gen? (98- 01) I would imagine they probably don't make it anymore. It's been on the bike since it was new.

Why would they steal a license plate?

I added some photos to the original post so you can see what it looks like. The plate mounted to the broken holes. They of course stole my tool kit, reg, and fix a flat that I had stored in there. I hope they come back so they see the big surprise I have for them.

 

you might have to try and fix it.
I've never seen anything like that, didn't know anyone made anything like that for any VFR.

 

Yea, I'm going to try a fiberglass repair kit. Already tried JB Weld but its too runny and takes too long to set up on a vertical surface. Thanks for looking.

 

Maybe a place that does sheet metal fabrication could repair or replace that part of it. Just a thought.

If I caught whom ever it was in the act, I would have bludgeoned them and saved my bullets. Sorry for your in-convenience, you should set a trap and see if they repeat. Maybe not, you don't wana make the five-o-clock news over stupid chit, but it would be fun right?

 

It would be fun, but the consequences might not be. I do have several shovels within reach of my garage door and I have been sitting out there to see who walks by and looks in with guilty looks on their face.

 

Many years ago a thief broke into my neighbor down the roads building(we live out in the country) He let his dogs out and for reasons unknown to him they wouldn't come in when he called them . They just kept barking. He figured they had a varmit traped. So after a half hour he goes to investigate, armed incase its a big varmit. Low and be hold he was surprised at what he found. Wife called the law. When they got there the crook told the cops my neighbor threatened to cut him in small pieces and feed him to his dogs. Then complained that the dogs were vicious. Officer couldn't stop laughing.

I tried the fiber glass repair kit. $25. It seemed to work well. Now I have to see it holds up to a drill bit for the new holes. Fingers crossed. :smiley_simmons:

 

Maybe reinforce that with a metal bracket. Your local hardware store or home improvement center should have a bunch to choose from for short money. Most auto parts store have sheet metal in small pieces for making patch type repairs. Just cut to size with a dremel, finish with a little rattle can black. Also short money.

 

Interesting undertail. I wonder if it is from something else and the previous owner repurposed it?
I hope you can get it fixed.

If the fiberglass repair doesn't hold up, I'd just JB Weld a piece of 3/4" metal to each side & drill your holes through them.

 

The company that made those wasn't around for too long, that must have been 10+ years ago or so. Only option is to repair or replace with stock. Story was they would randomly pop open on the road and everything would fall out. Like I said, the company wasn't around long but they did sell a few of them, Tailocker (http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~john/vfr/aftermarket/luggage.html#tailocker) I think they were called.

Any "fiberglass" fix is eventually going to wear away. A partial cure would be to install a neoprene grommet.

 

Why would the fiberglass wear away? It's only holding the plate. Should it be sealed with primer or paint to increase its life?

I haven't sanded it yet.

 

I found these online. It looks like they moded it with clips to fix any random opening problem.
