Thank you all for the advise. I just recently purchased the "Proficient Motorcycling" book and plan to order the others mentioned. I am also going to be taking a safety class through the MSF. When I bought the bike I brought a good friend of mine with me who has been riding for many many years, he drove it and said it is flawless(minus some cosmetic stuff) He also does all his own mantinence as did the guy I bought it from.

Everything said here has its merrits, some more than others. You said you were going to take the course. That simply is the absolute best advice. You can put into practice what you read and hear about such things as emergency braking and especially counter steering which if just read, sounds really odd. As far as practice on a smaller bike, I don't think what is being said here is wrong, but I don't totally buy into that. I am a believer in learning on what you will be riding. Just be cautious of the power you have and ride accordingly. And be aware of the weight. I have dropped mine lots but all except one drop was due to weight vs a back injury. The other was a bad case of target fixation leading to the weight issue.

Practice where safe and don't try keeping up with someone you have no business keeping pace with. You will still enjoy your ride.

Like OEM horns on Japanese bikes.

When some poor dude is aboot to off himself a/o somebody else, the boy scout approach to problem solution maybe gets a merit badge, but does it get the message across?

Lee Parks was our guest dude at "Sportbike Northwest" last year.

Dave Hough is a regular, a member of the club I am in, in Seattle and came on my rides many times including "The Isle of Vashon". Many pix of that in Google Images.

This is a plug of course. Details at www.Soundrider.com.

Best way to learn is just go out and ride and put sliders on everywhere because you will fall down, but you will get back up if you have sliders and folding levers. You will get better and not fall over time.
