My current bike is an 05' Superhawk. I love it and will never part with it. I am looking at a second bike and it will be a VFR. I have located an 04' with 2500 miles. Crack in the right fairing from a fall in the garage. Other than that, mint and runs great. The second is an 08' with 1500 miles. Still has warranty til November. Mint all the way around. Neither bike has ABS. The 04' is 4k, the 08' is 7k. Advice?

The only difference in those bikes will be the VTEC engagement. The '04 transition is around 6300rpm while the 08 will be 6800rpm for egagement and 6300rpm for disengagement. If you are dead set on a 6th gen, I would go for the one that is cheaper.

You have it backwards, mm, the 06 and up Are 6400 while the pre 06 were 6800. Also, post 06 bikes electrical systems are less prone to electrical issues. $7k is a little steep, try a thousand less and it would be alright, if it had some farkles.

    7k for 08 :scared:
If you have cash, you get much better price from private seller.
Here is the Spec for Vtec engagements
The sixth generation VFR (for the first time marketed only as the "Interceptor" in the USA and simply as the "VFR" in Japan) was introduced in 2002. For the first time it featured dual underseat exhausts, an optional anti-lock braking system (ABS) in addition to the LBS/DCBS, and optional hard luggage. It featured chain-driven cams rather than the traditional VFR gear-driven cams, and was the first non-JDM motorcycle to have Honda's VTEC valve-actuation technology. The implementation of VTEC was seen as a bid by Honda to meet tightening noise and emissions standards in Japan and abroad while improving the peak horsepower of the engine. Similar to the automotive version of VTEC-E the simplified motorcycle version of VTEC employs only two of the four valves per cylinder when operating at lower engine speeds. All four valves per cylinder are engaged above approximately 6,800 rpm. This is initiated by an electronically actuated oil spool valve, which send oil pressure to the lifter actuators, which then move the engagement pins into place above the valve stem, allowing the remaining two valves to open. This design allows for variable valve timing as well, since the cam lobe profiles can be made different.

After some criticism of the abruptness of power transition, Honda lowered the VTEC activation rpm threshold to 6,400 rpm in 2006. The VTEC disengages two cylinder valves when the engine speed drops again below 6,100 rpm.

Just and FYI and not a deal breaker by any means, but part of the electrical issues mentioned above were a wiring harness recall on the front of the bike for years 02-05. Any Honda dealer can tell you if it was done by running the VIN. No cost fix to you as it is a recall.

I think the power commander helps the earlier model VFR VTEC engagement...easily bought with the $$$ saved.

Update. Finally looked at the 08. It's at a dealer. 4 months of warranty left and it does have abs. They will take 6500. Leaning toward the 08. Forgot to mention the guy with the 04 cut 1" off the windshield. not a bad job, but still......

Bike has heli bars. Didn't know they were so pricey. I think I'll be looking for stock clip-ons though. I like the riding position on my VTR and standard VFR's are pretty close.

Good choice on the ABS. I have the stock bars and might as well part with them as they don't work for me on long rides.

Lots of twisties in the area. Been seeing Buells and EBR for years. A bit too pricey although his latest is like a price drop down to what, 19k?
