Hi all, loving the site, what a resource!

apologies for the dumb question, (and I have tried a search), but does the VTEC only kick-in when engine is at a certain temperature? Mine failed to kick in below 65 Deg Celsius, and I don't think I've noticed that before.

It's a 2002 VTEC, 30k miles, holes in service history, but it's still under a 3 month warranty and is due for its (pre) delivery service next week. (I agreed to come back in for this as I needed bike urgently.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks folks!

I believe the number is 154 deg before the V-tec comes alive.

Just in case anyone doesn't know it already and sees this thread - possible reason for VTEC not kicking in even after reaching the above temps is a faulty thermostat. It has been mentioned hundreds of times before in many threads, but it is always good to reiterate the fact in context.

Thanks buddy. for future, does the enabling function have it's own thermostat, or all managed by ECU?

    cheers

I would imagine it is the same for most (if not all) thermostats. They are mechanical in nature and not controlled by any computer. When the temperature reaches a determined range, a wax cylinder melts, expanding and pushes the valve open. That's why you can have a thermostat stuck open cooling the engine from start thus preventing VTEC from engaging.
