I short shift my chit, all my stuff pretty much, specially 1st to 2nd gear shifts when I am in traffic and urban envirnment. When I raced, I only clutched from 1st to 2nd, then it was clutchless up shifts, clutch down shifts, non-gp-shift. On the street, I always use the clutch, and most times, you can't hear the gear changes, (usually.)

If your doing power shifts from 1st to 2nd regularly, you may be in for some motor oot maintenance. good luck :vtr2:

You beat on anything and it will break for sure, when you shift in the first two gear make sure its fully engaged till you hammer on the gas, that way you shouldn't break anything. You need to slow up your shifting and don't miss shifts-that's where a thicker oil can help a little 10-50 does help a bit. I noticed 10-50w did help when the engine got real hot. I put in 1 qt or 10-40 and 2 qts of 10-50, 1/3 qt of 10-50.:chaingun::bluesbros::vader::banana::heh:

1.) stop flaming errr one. They are just fukin wit ya. They kid cause you are one of the guys.

2.) try an oil change. It's a cheap test. Either it's fine and you needed an oil change or you have something bigger wrong.

perhaps his oil thin out, it will over time-10-50 becomes 10-40 then 10-30w, a really hot gear box isn't going to shift right-this happens on any bike. It was 86 today and it was running real hot, fan kicked in-when I stopped I turn the engine off AND LET THE FAN RUN A LITTLE BIT-YOU can cook oil that way-! I don't really care what you do.

Yeah this, I just replaced my 94K motor for the same reason, easier/cheaper to pop in a used 25K motor than pull mine and rebuild the 2nd gear. Mine got to the point it wouldn't stay in 2nd unless I was very gentle with the throttle roll on, or I held it in 2nd with my toe. Started at about 80-83K and got progressively worse. Started about the time I began commuting 50 miles on city streets, lots of stop and go, launching 1st, 2nd...2 years of that the old transmission didn't appreciate.

What makes it perfect is the new to me used motor has popped out of 2nd a few times now. Lazy shifting somewhat but I suspect it was hammered on by a PO. I'm being more precise on the shifts now, hoping it will go a few years but I suspect I'll be replacing the gears at some point. Could be the shift fork or drum, no way to be sure unless you tear it down. At 8.5K at least it's got plenty of good miles left. If you do it yourself it will probably cost about $300, but you'll have to pull the motor and crack it open bottom side up.

The 1-2 shift requires a major boot to get it to engage properly, and clutchless shifting probably isn't the best idea for those two gears. I baby my bike like crazy, and it will still pop out of second under full acceleration if I don't get it quite right.

And I actually did drag race my VFR tonight. Naturally it popped out of second on me for the first time in over a year, and I got knocked out as a result :(

There are dudes that seem to always have shifting and tranny problems and there are dudes that never do.

This I learned from the great guru on the mountain.

Unless we're talking some some of classic or historical or prized status, I'm gonna ride/run the shit outta it. Its a bike. It's what "$5XXX" used? If I only get 50,000 miles rather than 100,000 miles but got to romp on it, so be it.

    Ride your own ride.

^so your obviously not "poosy-ee-ing" around oot there in the "Garden-State" :pound: I ride how I ride, my own stuff that is. I have been known to take certain liberties with other peoples bikes/cars.

When I used to race, I went right to the ragged edge. I wanted to win and went as fast as I could, bike longevity never entered into the equation. Being on the street, I think of having to replace parts and an errant dawg or donut eater getting me. So, I am more conservative, please don't misconstrue that into being a "poosy-footer."

Funny, you tout your 10w-50 blend as helping cool the bike better, yet you turned off your bike in fear of overheating. Hilarious! Oil has a miniscule role in cooling this bike. Your little leave the fan run thing is cute, the bike doesn't have a turbo, you know.

Also, just because the bikes fans turn on doesn't mean it's overheating. The owners manual, the thing you never read, says overheating starts at 251*F. Coincedentally, that's about the temp synthetic oil starts to break down.

So keep calm and ride on.

LOL. No, I'm not one to poosy-foot around in my vehicles, and I know there are tons of guys that are faster and better than me. But don't get me wrong, I believe in maintenance and being smart about chit - I ain't gonna fire up a car or bike at 32* outside and flog on in from the moment I pull outta my driveway. I buy my vehicles for a purpose, and use them for that. If the OP wants to hammer on his bike, I say go for it.

I wish I had a dollar for every bike I have worked on that had tyres grossly under-inflated or mis adjusted cable clutches, etc list goes on and is sometime pretty damn hilarious. Not trying to say the original G, I mean, OP can't find his/her arse with a funnel, but you know; from my experiences, some people are really oot of touch with chit. Its not a crime "not to know" but once your edmucated then its open season :rambo:

    Cheers ; )
