So i have a 84 vf500f, with a quirk, it runs like a champ. Now here comes the weird part after its warm it likes to kill out if I let it drop to 1000 rpm or below, if I keep the idle up it will run unroll the tank is empty, also it has to wait for 30 minute or an hour to start again? Has anyone solved this problem before?
I have an 84 VF500. Never had that problem. Shouldn't the idle be at 1100 +/- 100 rpm? I did have my GSXR die one me recently a few times and took 5 minutes to restart, ended being the battery couldn't hold the load any longer. Replaced the battery and the bike is fine now. Jen
You will need to give more details about this issue--does it not crank, does it crank but no spark plug fires, does it crank with spark, etc. Is it a thermal issue--does it run when cold but fails when the engine gets hot, etc. Is the bike all original or has it been modified, has the wiring harness been modified. Are all the electrical connections clean and corrosion free or is there an issue of corroded terminals on the spark coils, grounds, etc... Is there rust in the fuel tank, do you have a fuel filter and is it clogged, were the mixture screws used to set the idle speed according to the rpm-drop method in the manual... Gotta have all the info to find the culprit--Lots of stuff it could be, yours to check it is.
Next time she quits, pull the plugs and check for signs of excessive richness (black plugs) or leanness (almost-white plugs). A poor synch or low compression can also cause problems at lower idle speeds.
