Planning a fairly lengthy trip soon on the 86. New tires oil change etc.. decided to pop the left hand side cover and take a look at the R/R even though the bikes been running fine. AC voltage connector hiding behind the fuel pump:

Lucky to catch it when I did, wiring on the regulator side of the plug starting to shed its insulation. Incredibly lucky the 3 phases haven't shorted out yet. Wiring within a few inches of the plug on either side is warm to the touch after running. Charging voltage is still a money 14.## < .5 above 3k RPM. After I cut back to good wiring will check the AC voltage output of the stator. Will eliminate the plug go with direct solder and heat shrink. I have a spare R/R on order to take with me just in case.

Oh, I'm a charter member. This isn't just a Viffer issue. I've encountered toast stators, r/r's, connectors on other Hondas and a Yamahaha.

Anyway, plugs gone. Stator Ohm'd out within specs between the windings. No short to ground. Rev'd to 4-5K was putting out around 70 VAC

results like that are pretty easy with good old 60/40. Silver bearing requires insane amounts of heat and doesn't flow as nicely.

Ordered an OEM style one from Rick's. Have also had good results with electrex world products as well.

I'd look at the RR62 from electrex. Says it's MOSFET based
