This is my first post here at VFRW. Hopefully you all can give me some insight into what is going on with my bike. Here is the issue:

I unplugged my PAIR connector a few weeks ago, mainly just out of curiousity to see if it would improve smoothness. Bike has ran fine. I went to plug it back in and now the bike won't start.

When I turn on the ignition, I DO here the fuel pump. But it does not sound right. It is much higher pitched and is continuous. It doesn't shut off after a couple seconds like it would normally. It almost makes me think the pump is running dry, due to no fluid restriction. That is just a guess, I honestly have no idea. In this state, the bike won't start. Just turns and turns. Nothing.

BUT, if I lift the tank completely, it starts! What the heck? I can turn the key with the tank down, hear high pitched fuel pump, lift tank, hear a click from the engine and the fuel starts pumping with the normal 2 seconds and then shut off. It runs just fine with the tank up. With the tank completely raised it acts normal, but the second I go to lower the tank, the engine dies and I am back at square one.

I am new to this bike and FI bikes in general, but I am not new with vehicles. Where do I start? Pull the fairings and start looking for bad wires or grounds? All connections under the tank are good and secure. I am just at a loss with these symptoms.

Thank you. Wasn't sure if that was acceptable.

No worries. It just becomes a troubleshooting nightmare as two threads start to take off and evolve with different facts. Best of luck on your issue and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like the pump is running dry and when you lift the tank gravity takes over to prime the pump, apart from that no idea but it is obviously related to the fuel level in the tank

Is it possible that you have pinched a fuel line in lifting the tank to do the pair work?

Good call I would say but more like pinching the line when the tank is lowered into position and lifting it frees the pinched hose or the hose is getting an airlock but I would think the pump should pull an air bubble through or maybe the air bubble gets into the pump and it just can't clear it. Anything is possible but it is obviously a fuel flow problem to the pump
