Guys with ALLOT of us riding this weekend and R3 coming up please for the love of all that you hold dear and holy. Pay attention out there and ride safe... This was a co-worker that was in a hurry had probably ridden this road 1000 times, and knew he had once chance to pass this line of vehicles. It's just not worth it... 2 days later he is still in ICU in critical condition and not a very good prognosis.

Via OSP FlashAlert:

Oregon State Police (OSP) is continuing the investigation into Tuesday afternoon's serious injury traffic crash involving a motorcycle and pickup on Highway 47 about two miles south of Vernonia.

On May 20, 2014 at approximately 5:26 p.m., a 2012 Kawasaki Ninja ZX600 motorcycle operated by JUSTIN M. REINA, age 28, from Hillsboro, was northbound on Highway 47 near milepost 66. According to witnesses, the motorcycle initiated a high speed pass of a passenger car on a short straight section of highway. A 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by KAREN MORRISON, age 52, from Vernonia, was northbound ahead of the car being passed and started a signaled left turn into her driveway just as REINA was attempting to pass the pickup.

The motorcycle crashed into the driver's side door of the turning pickup. REINA was ejected off the motorcycle and came to rest a short distance in front of the pickup.

A local resident heard the crash, ran to the scene and found REINA unresponsive and not breathing. The resident repositioned REINA and opened his airway allowing him to start breathing. Vernonia Fire Department and Metro West Ambulance personnel responded to the scene. REINA, who was wearing a protective helmet, was transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health & Science University. He is in critical condition.

KAREN MORRISON has minor injury but declined emergency medical transport. Her husband/passenger was not injured. Both were using safety restraints.

OSP Senior Trooper Mark McDougal and Recruit Trooper Darrin LaDick are investigating the crash.

OSP was also assisted at the scene by Vernonia Police Department and ODOT. The highway was intermittently closed for two hours.

With Memorial Day Holiday weekend approaching, OSP and ODOT remind all drivers and motorcycle operators that May is "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month" in Oregon. According to ODOT, 43 people lost their lives in motorcycle crashes in 2013, down from 51 in 2012. Last year, 73 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes in Oregon were attributed to the motorcyclist committing the primary error leading to the crash. 05_20_2014_seriousinj_mtc_hwy47_mp66.2.jpg

Oregon 20 is another especially between the Coast and Philomath/Corvallis. Two dudes one on a Harley and another harleydood doing insane passes bit the big one just this month. Two U students playing the leadfoot boogie lost control and ended up in the river and drowned.

Update from Justin's family
It's day 5. Justin is still in ICU and hasn't woken up yet. He is still using a ventilator, but slowly making progress towards breathing on his own. He still has a bolt in his head measuring his brain pressure. They're hoping to remove it tomorrow to do an MRI. He's currently getting his teeth brushed. We joke that it's his favorite part because we all know he hates it by how he squirms. He's never liked brushing his teeth. We are so thankful for the little blessings that give us hope and remind us that God is good. If you could, please pray for quick healing, 110% brain functioning, unity and patience as a family, trust in God and the doctors, and for the moment Justin wakes up and sees all that is happening. Thank you all for your love and support.

So it's been awhile but I figured I'd post a quick update...

Justin's condition is progressing for the better much faster than anybody anticipated... He is speaking in full sentences and doing math... Still has a long road ahead of him but the prognosis is much better than it was even a week ago...

For National Ride to Work day. Our Club dedicated our lunch time ride to him... The Video is
