Does anyone know if you can use the 6th gen coil on plug leads on a 5th gen and get rid of the coils?
Seems too easy to do, there must be a reason why it hasn't been done by everyone.

It's been done. Just not a lot of reasons to go out of your way to do it (short of building a street fighter) on an already running machine so it's rare. It's not like there's measurable performance gains to be had.

The 6th Gen units won't work, as they are 3 lead type, where most bikes use 2 lead types. I did my 5th Gen with CBR1000RR 2007 CoP's but you can use most any. The GSXR750 units are a bit shorter than the CBR ones, so may fit even better.
The CoP's fit straight into the plug holes, you may need to modify the top seal to get a snug fit. i just added a couple of O-rings to stabilise the CoP in the hole at the top. If you look for my 10 year refresh threads its covered in there.

I believe I stand corrected. I knew coil on plug has been done a couple times I knew of but not versed enough on the specifics of whether they were sourced from the 6gen or not. I suspect Mohawk knows better than I.

The advantage of using 6th gen is that they'll fit straight in.
Does anyone have a 6th gen wiring diagram to see what the third cable is for?
Using the coil on plugs will get rid of 4 coils from around frame/air box and clear up some clutter.

If clutter is what bugs you, your time would probably be better spent working a couple hours of overtime and hiring a naked maid to clean your house. Then go ride your bike.

If I hire a naked maid, I doubt I'd be able to get my leathers done up and ride anywhere.

No, just don't seem to be able to stop fiddling with it.
By the time I finish spending all my money on it & get it just right, I'll probably buy a new one.
Think of all the weight I'll save from getting rid of the old coils & leads, there must easily be 20 grams to be saved. If I only find another 1400 items to do the same with, I'll save a kilo or so.

Strip the engine & the whole bike, replace every structural bolt wit Ti & non structural with Alloy, will save a few kilo's :)
