Yeah, yeah, you get one of them fancy shmancy 800's and nothing gets done on the 500. Get to work!

Look forward to the progress pics.

Well I've hit a snag I pulled the stator cover off only to find oil and lots of it! So now I've got to figure out what to do next.

It's all good - oil is supposed to be behind there!

freaked me out the first time I saw it too. The old 2 strokes of the 70s were dry on that side.

Be interested to see how it comes out. Also was interesting to see the dyno figures from the mag. My Euro spec 1986 model made 59rwhp about 2001 just before I sold it ! made more power with the snoprkel in, but the noise with it out was aweaome, if a bit like being beat on the chest with a soft bosing glove :) May be worth checking the cam specs between the different regions ! Some reground cams should be able to lift the torque curve peak higher up the RPM range & thus increase peak HP, provided it can breathe!

We're still here Matt, don't think you've lost us. i can't wait to see what comes next- swingarm looks great BTW. My first 500 swallowed a valve when the rods stretched and it made contact with the piston, so definitely go with the Carillo rods when you do the motor build up.

It wasn't the rods I'm sure, almost certainly it was the valve springs. That is very common with the VF500's, rod stretch is unheard of. I would suggest saving your money on those rods and putting it towards the top end instead.

I stand corrected- which is a good thing since those rods were astronomical in price. i think Matt mentioned he had an idea for upgraded valve springs, so hopefully they work out for him.

It has been awhile, figured you get back at it sooner or later. Look forward to any progress pics you may post. I always thought this was going to be one special 500. Now get to work.

When did you get the RC51? Nice score.

Thank you for the kind words I planned on taking some pictures today but the damn camera battery's were dead. What a bummer. So tomorrow I'll grab some battery's and get this thing rolling.

    Hello forum

Today is a very sad day I've decided to sell my 500 I've weight all my options and unfortunately I can't pursue racing with only enough money to spend on one machine and I hate the fact that it's just sit's in the garage collecting so I would like to sell it to a fellow 500 lover. She has been a great machine and has had a documented life since I've owned her. I will not part her out if anyone is interested it's in the whole machine and not for bits and piece's. PM me with offers thank you.

It sure is tough to find time for bikes with kids in the house.

I just picked up an 86 500 basket case I have an 85 magna v30 500 for parts I want to use the carbs from my research it appears to be the same carb set up just a lower air box to swap out which I got today. OK with that being said.

Did the 86 motor have any problems with the bigger carbs did you have to change jets or anything?
Can't really find parts for the 86 carbs
