Actually, my 5th gen' was non-ABS, unless you are referring to skimad's experience?

Thankfully though, the brakes were pretty damn good, and i had fitted a new set of high friction EBC pads on the front about 3 weeks earlier to get it through MOT, so they bit hard, and I did have time to scrub off a little speed before impact. Only really enough time to think "OH FU-" though...

As for being deterred from looking at a quick bike, let's face it - even most middling size bikes these days have far more to offer in terms of speed than it is really sensible to try to use all of on the road, so ultimately it comes down to self-restraint, and picking your moments wisely to give it a fistful of throttle and put a big grin on your face without getting yourself killed... But I do take your point.
    Safe riding buddy.

Thanks man. You gotta pick yourself up and get on with it, y'know... What else is there to do?

Hmmm, they are indeed fulla character I'm sure. Even if my budget would stretch to one though, I'm not sure I'd fit on it very well. Have you owned one? You think I'd manage being taller than average?

Well I'm pretty grateful for that bit, yeah. I did love the bike, but ultimately I have to be pragmatic and accept that even if I was attached to it, at the end of the day it was just metal and plastic, and can be replaced - much unlike dead motorcyclists...

So you're right, although I still cringe to look at the photos.

As everyone said, glad to read you survived the collision. Young beginner drivers are a serious risk on the road. I know because I raised two beautiful daughters and both have had auto related loses in judgement resulting in property damage.
Having ridden both the BB and 'Busa, I have to say they are in another league than the VFR of any flavor. They are beasts with exceptional power, especially the busa. I own one. It's a gen1 in stock form and rides like a pussycat around town. When you nail it in ANY gear at near any speed, you had better be hanging on and paying attention. Ludicrous speed and acceleration come to mind. Highway speed roll ins never cease to amaze me!I'm only 6' 220# but it fits very well. Even done some touring. It is one tough bike with the exception of 2nd geAr failures usually from abuse. Our '96 VFR is more comfortable two up before it was lowered.
I would look at the new VFR also but there are some other great bikes as well. Happy hunting!

Wow glad your ok!! That really could have been a very bad out come for you!

Now for the bike. YES look at the Blackbird. Matter of fact it has a big following in the UK. It's basically a 750 with a shit load of power and comfort. Comfort for me that is, I came off a first gen basically track setup for one up sport touring. It is so close to the 750's it's not funny. But with a shit load of power. That's giggling, ball busting, yahooing flat out shit load of power. Makes you go YEA every time you flick your wrist. Though I must say I haven't had much at all saddle time as of yet. But what little I had has convinced me to go across country on it in May. About 6000 miles total round trip. I want to cruise across NM/AZ at about 140ish just moping along. Which that's one of it's strong points. If you do then go for the fuel injected. Preferably 2001 and up because they have all the updates in them as far as good stuff. Now over there by you they kept selling till 2008 where as here 2002 was the last year. So for you the 2002 or 03 and up(forgot) came with cats and was detuned some in the fuel mapping for pollution standards. So was down about 10hp to 152(crank) 130 wheel where as 97-2002 was 164/140ish depending as always.

So it you loved your VFR I think you'll at least like the BB to take for a ride. One caution though, the right hand twister thing goes into warp drive when half or above twist.

Oh you should find it smoother the the VFR. No joke there. Here's some Super sites. yes that was a pun ha ha I is funny.........

    http://www.cbrxx.com/

    http://www.ixxra.co.uk/v-web/phpBB3/index.php

    http://www.superblackbird.co.uk/

Good luck to you no matter what you buy. Pip pip cheerio........stiff upper lip and all.................................

I hope you enjoy your road trip, it sounds good.

Thanks for the pointers. I've still not found anything I wanted to part with cash for, but as I am now bikeless, I'm sure it won't be long... And I will try a blackbird before I buy anything I think.

    Pip pip yourself!

WOW Shit! It broke the forks off! I have honestly never seen this. That bike is totally shot. Usually I am an optimist but there is too much broken and too many vital question marks to do any thing with that. You are so fortunate to be still with us. Glad you made it mate!

Yep, no question of a fix, thus the thread title...

Thanks buddy. Everyone I've showed those pics to has said pretty much the same, and I can appreciate why. Can't say I felt very lucky though if you see what I mean...

But yes, I'm glad to still be here. Safe riding mate, keep your eyes peeled.

sucks that you had the accident. I hope that her insurance is covering what needs to be covered. and it is sad to see the bike laying on a friggin pallet like it is...
good luck on your recovery, may it be as painless as possible...

    Thanks, I'm getting there.

Yeah, it will I think. I should at least be able to find myself a decent replacement through the insurance, but of course it won't be that particular bike...

Sad indeed, it's right outside my front door, so is the sight I'm greeted with every morning. Not a happy start to the day, but I suppose it is a reminder if ever it where needed to ride in a life-preserving sorta way. There is no shortage of useless drivers out there. Keep looking out for yourself mate.

    And then there was another...

I felt as you guys had offered alotta good will, I owed it to you to post a few pics of the sight outside my front door today:

    IMAG1156.jpg IMAG1157.jpg IMAG1158.jpg IMAG1159[1].jpg

Purchased yesterday, and parked alongside the painfully mangled sight of my much-loved '98.
Yr.2000, 15600mls, and about as pristine as you could expect a 14yr old machine to be...

That's the rule alright but the practical application can be a bit difficult. We are just acknowledging and admiring your intestinal fortitude.

Well, said intestinal fortitude was duly rewarded this evening with the first spin on my new wheels.

That felt pretty damn good indeed... :bolt:
