I need some opinions as to whether I'm jumping the gun on switching to a semi-synthetic oil. The Honda Owner's Manual for the VFR states that the break-in period is 300 miles. So, at 300 miles, I did an oil change and put in a synthetic petroleum blend, not a full synthetic.

The owner's manual does not state anything about not using synthetic oil during break-in. To make things even tougher, Mobil and Exxon claim that you can do an engine break-in purely on a synthetic oil. Even Honda claims that you can do a break-in on their HP4 semi-synthetic oil.

So, what do you guys think? Am I switching too quickly even though I have followed the guidelines of the owner's manual? If so, how long should I wait? I've put 160 miles on the bike with the semi-synthetic. Since it is not a full synthetic, will this cause any problems if I switch back to a petroleum based oil?

Thanks in advance for any feedback that you guys can provide. I want to do the right thing here. The problem is that there is nothing that clearly states what you should or shouldn't do.

You are fine, don't worry about it and ride. Vary your RPM, and shift around a lot.

The 2007 owner's manual states 300 miles for the break-in period and 600 miles for the first oil change. I decided to change the oil after the break-in period just to get the crud out of there. That's why I then added a semi-synthetic. I'm going with the belief that the rings have properly seated during this time. I'll change it again at 600 miles, even if it doesn't need it.
