I may be able to help some. Having been castigated recently for using words of more than one syllable and other nefarious activities, If you could state which is your favorite look we can continue. This of course goes for everyone including the harleydoods.

I have friends in San Francisco.. As I understand it the latest Spring highlight will be the Johnny Depp perforated fabric outfit with matching tricorn crash helmet for the pirate fans. This from the copulation of Harley and Disney Inc.

I think there is a serious thread of bigotry that run through the Harley "religion." This goes way beyond choice of motorcycle style and borders on the xenophobic. I am sure that the hatred of "Jap bikes' is born out of many older rider's suspicion of the Japanese culture and maybe a bit of rage that "hey! we won the war. How dare they build good stuff." My mom is 85. She says "we hated the Japanese." The truth is she still does. She knows that it is irrational but that's what she was taught and that's what she is going with. The war is over. The economy is global. Harley is as much a part of that global marketing effort as Honda.

After ya get rid of the "buy some of our shit" popup and access the "history" box where the dude with the lisp narrates a really great example of some ad writers jerk off idea of revisionist history, citing how Indian helped win WWII instead of being run OOB by HD after WWII. Worse is the compilation of film clips where lisp dude had the bikes as post WWII flattrack bikes. Some that were long gone just after WWI.

The "Wrecking Crew" was c 1920 and yes folks, started by HD. Pro racing with pari-mutuel type betting. They hired the best of the best. That all ended with Class C racing.

All the bikes shown are not Indians either.

We then seque to the "Dealership" part and the worship of the Holy Sturgis with the cheesy reference to " It all started here" ploy. Never mind that in any book of the real history of bikes made here there are hundreds that "bit the dust", and the greatest concentration of bikes and riders in the entire universe holding steady in SoCal for who knows how long.

There may be a smidgen of irony here in that the bikes for a certain bunch are fine but the ad is a crock of shit. The best part is it might get some harleydoods off the street..

The yen for Harleys is high in Japan. Mucho pesos for one. HD sold tooling and technology to the Japanese in the 1920s There are Japanese versions of HD that are rare and highly collectable.

Ronald Raygun did the same number on Japanese imports by imposing a displacement tariff on Japanese bikes. He also shitcanned the Air Traffic Controllers because he suddenly became anti-union because GE and HD were jerking his strings and his old lady was ruling by horoscope.

It's probably best that hog didn't wash up on US shores. A hunk of concrete dock hit the beach in Coastal Ogeron. 8.4 million pesos later and after becoming the latest photo op for anybody with a 1 megapixel camera and 2.8 children, a burning and cleansing of invasive species not including any that could be made into sushi or tossed into some Top Ramen, They cut it up (sort of) and sold chunks of the damn thing to anybody that wanted one.

Ronny did the asian mc builders a favor in the long run by forcing them to build tariff beating 70cc and the 600cc bikes that became performance monsters. The tech trickled up into the later 750cc and 1000cc machines.
    Thanks Cowboy!!

Right on! Good things sometimes come from misdeeds and sometimes even from cheesy politics. About the same timeframe HD was heavily promoting high resale value and that all units were sold.

Being kind of new on this "gather" and obviously not a noob in general, the skinny in part. I have owned one HD race one one season and have custody of a 1950's race bike that will go into a museum if the powers that be ever get their shit together.

A very close compadre of mine has wrttten several books on HD's and contributed to a couple of others. Greg Field by name. The past prez of my MC club is a HD sales manager. Just talked to him yesterday about how HD screws the sales guys on commissions. His main ride is a 1955 K.. a couple of Aeromacchis (sp??) and a beveldrive Duc. He had a Buell but Tboned a cager and it was bye-bye Buell and almost bye-bye Barry.

More on Greg who is having heart problems.. and you may be seeing me on harleydood fora ( maybe as Mad Doggie) being nice and asking for money. Authors do not make all that much money and this guy is really sick.

The fun part is that Greg rides a couple of Moto-Guzzis and makes shit for old De Havilland seaplanes and is a docent at the Boeing Museum in Seattle. No HD for him either.. LOL

Ah Reagan and the tariffs. Let's save one floundering American company by punishing the dealerships and customers of four major importers. American $ being spent at American owned dealerships with a shit ton of American aftermarket parts geared towards the larger import bikes. Maybe some hindsight but that was a dumb idea. Pay or play. The Japs played and some bikes were neutered to 700cc others became standouts like the Nighthawk 700. As I recall folks still werent flocking to buy antiquated tech of HD. It seems Arnold Schwarzeneger sold more hogs by driving a Fatboy through the la sewer system a few years later. HD's and cigars became the must have macho props for accountants and dentists. 1980 they could barely give them away. 1988 you were on a waiting list. Tariffs had nothing to do with it. Hollywood and the first HD engine to NOT sweat oil, the EVO were the savior of HD. Now CL ads are 4out 5 ads are for HD's and HD type "choppas"
Tell me if I wrong, memory fails me sometimes. Too much ketchup as my vegetable.

My old bike BMW shop boss was a long time HD Mechanic. He would regale us with stories of how Harley would screw the dealers and their customers. He would dance around the shop and recite faults, known to Harley engineers, but left unfixed. He would wax poetic about the evils of Topper scooters and Hummers. He and I built a K Sportster for a customer and the whole time he bitched about the design flaws. Very fun stuff.

Actually that was a great idea.....by the Harley marketing department. They sold the government (Ronnie?) on the nostalgia of the Harley mystic and being Mericas only real motorcycle. It needed saved, it's a patriotic symbol of Merica. It worked!! And they are still using the same marketing today. Can you blame them?

Now with all the myths, legends and other bs being all true, the marque will take a lot to kill it cause it's a life style.
