Guys; This is about as simple and non controversial as it gets. For a 2000 VFR 800 what type and weight motor oil should I use? Also any recomendations on an oil filter? P.S -I did not get an owners manual with the bike. Tks ed
Off the shelf Honda. I've used it in every bike I've ever owned, even the non Honda's. KC-10 FE out... lane:
OK can you be a little more specific, What weight oil and when you say off the shelf Honda,do you mean regular petroleum or the synthetic Honda stuff? Thanks eddie
10-40W Honda gold red cap synthetic is what I use to use till I found a deal on what's in my bike now, Amsoil Hi-po Motorcycle 10-40w an OEM filter always here.
Honda GN4, same stuff the manual calls for. I'm sure there are dozens of arguments in favor of full syn but in reality, there is no reason. You might get a slightly smoother transmission but its plenty smooth as it is. Why spend the extra $$$? KC-10 FE out... lane:
RVFR; Thanks , How long have you used Amsoil? Some people really swear by it. Personally not tried it as yet, I have had good luck with Redline. What makes you a fan of the Amsoil Product? Thanks eddie
I have only used Amsoil in my VFR. I've done about 10000 miles and every time I've changed it, it's looked pretty good. I ride fairly hard, too. Mostly stop and go, wheelie, stop go wheelie, etc.
Mmm just what I've read and what engines look like after they've been taken a part using Amoil. that and at this last service when I went to pick up the bike the tech asked what Oil I used? at first I thought gulp, why, whats wrong? he smile and told me my engine is like new inside. I've been using use Honda synthetic for god knows how long till just last year, price and availability on the Amsoil really was the big reason for the switch. since then I have put 14K on this VFR using Amsoil so all is good. I'd say. Some will say it's not necessary, well it's their choice, their bike, but for me it's pretty simple..
The 2000's run as hot as my '01, and heat destroys oil. I use Redline full synth, 10W40 in the winter and 20W50 in the summer, which is consistent with the recommendations in the owners manual. Of course I also live in Houston, where it gets stinkin' hot in the summer and a cold winter is a couple of nights in the mid twenties (deg F). On my afternoon commute home during the summer I routinely see sustained temps of 235 deg F. I use the OEM oil filter. Pick them up from Bike Bandit, they have the best prices on OEM bits I have seen, and they have an AMA discount as a sweetener. For all about oil, I suggest this page http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Oils1.html But go take a leak first, this is a comprehensive discussion. I run Delvac in my air/oil cooled Bandit.
Use Mobil 1 10w40 4xt full synthetic motorcycle oil. I buy it by the case at the local Auto Zone. I decided to use this after reading the Sport Rider oil testing reports. I think the major thing is use synthetic. - As with any oil thread - to each his own, there always 500 opinions on oil - throw in chain lube and tires. Good luck, MD
I do the same, except I don't buy it by the case. Oh, and except I buy it because of the oil article in Motorcycle Consumer News. So two mags came up with similar conclusions apparently, that is a good sign. and anything to do with oil is controversial
Hey 5th Gen rider here and the Honda oil is good, but I switched over to Amsoil 10-40w synthetic oil and an OEM filter. I also like Motul oil.
I know this may not be a popular opinion, but you asked. I use whatever is on sale when I go into the discount stores. My '85 atc350x still runs well to this day. My '02vfr has 41k miles on it and also runs like the day it rolled off the showroom floor. Spend as much as you want. I'll spend the least amount possible.
so, digging this old post back up for a minute, I am getting ready to change the oil on mine.....auto vs moto specific Mobil 1..... is there really THAT big of a difference for commuter/casual riding?? According to the research here, not too much: http://www.xs11.com/stories/mcnoil94.htm While the article is 12 years old, my bike is getting long in the tooth as well. Thoughts?
-Use motorcycle specific oil. (12 years is a long time and technology marches on) http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0310_oil/ MD
